Stores at Mayfair mall and The Cheesecake Factory close as protesters call for the firing of a Wauwatosa police officer - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

WAUWATOSA — For at least the second time in the last two weeks, stores at Mayfair mall closed as protesters marched throughout the mall Thursday afternoon.

A short time later, the nearby Cheesecake Factory shut down as protesters made their way inside the restaurant.

After about 45 minutes, the protesters left the restaurant and then headed to Wauwatosa City Hall where the city's Equity and Inclusion Commission are having a meeting at 6 p.m.

Last week, the panel urged the city to ban police chokeholds and no-knock search warrants. The citizen-led panel also wants all Wauwatosa police officers to wear body cameras.

On Monday, the city took a step toward implementing body cameras. The Committee of the Whole, another city panel, unanimously agreed to send specific financial and policy questions about their use and implementation to the government affairs and financial affairs committees.

Those committees could then make recommendations to the common council.

The afternoon started with about 100 people protesting inside and outside the mall on Thursday, calling for the mall to shut down.

In one instance, a group marched into Victoria's Secret, chanting "shut it down" and "Black lives matter."

They were also calling for the termination of Wauwatosa police officer Joseph Mensah, who has fatally shot three people in five years.

It's the latest in several marches at the mall, where 17-year-old Alvin Cole was fatally shot by Mensah in The Cheescake Factory parking lot in February.

Cole's family spoke inside the restaurant on Thursday.

Jay Anderson Jr., a 25-year-old from Milwaukee, was fatally shot by Mensah in 2016. The Cole and Anderson families filed a complaint against Mensah on June 18.

Antonio Gonzales, a 29-year-old from Wauwatosa, was killed by Mensah in 2015.

The Anderson and Gonzales shootings were ruled justified self-defense by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office. The Cole shooting is still under investigation.
