Each of the hospitals had been struggling financially due to fewer patients, increasing costs, old and inefficient buildings, and reimbursements from Medicaid that don’t cover the cost of care, Schneider said earlier this year. The hospitals serve many patients on Medicaid, a state- and federally-funded health insurance program for people with low incomes.
