If watching someone hit a giant meatball off the first tee-box sounds like your kind of golf experience then the Italian Open is the event for you.
On Saturday, the Pass Christian Isles Golf Club is hosting its 47th annual two-person golf scramble where the shotgun goesa boom.
The all-day event serves as an important fundraiser for PCI, especially when it comes to repairing the damage from Hurricane Zeta.
General Manager LeeAnn Bonney says they’re looking at more than 150 golfers hitting the links this weekend which could end up being the most in club history.
With tee times at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. followed by a band for the nightcap and of course the flying meatballs, the good times are always rolling at the Italian Open. “It’s just so much fun. Everybody comes out and we have people that come out year to year, so this is the time people come out that maybe haven’t seen each other for the year, especially after COVID. So, there’s a lot of friends, a lot of comradery and we just have fun all day. They strike a meat ball. They do it both in the morning and in the afternoon for both rounds.”
(“And how many regular sized meatballs would you say that one is the equivalent to?”) “Oh Lord. It’s probably about six inches across. It’s a huge meatball, so probably 10 meatballs.”
Even if you don’t want to necessarily hit the links for the Italian Open, you can still purchase an all-you-can-eat-and-drink social ticket for $25.
This year’s Grand Marshal is Gary Bennett and the Mama Mia is Marie Adkins.
