Pitching-dominant six-week season comes to a close: Recapping the Oregon high school baseball season - OregonLive

Last month we preview the spring baseball season by highlighting Class 6A athletes who stand out to coaches not only for their skills on the diamond, but for their work ethic, attitude, leadership and perseverance during a trying past year.

Now that this short, strange spring season is over, here are some coaches’ takes on how the season ended and how the whole thing went overall.

Canby

From coach JJ Stolsig:

In our last week we went 2-1. We had a big outing from Joey Gartrell on Tuesday where he went six innings and struck out 15. Bryce Oliver on the same day was 4 for 4 with two home runs, a double, a triple and 6 RBIs.

On Wednesday, Kellan Oakes and Joe Brauckmiller combined to give up one run. Oliver hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to give us the 4-1 lead and eventually the win. Bryce was 2 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Oakes also had two hits on the day, and senior Christian Pottratz drove in our other run.

We said goodbye to six seniors this week: Kaden Sander, Rylan Wymer, Vann Bittenbender, Zack Markell, Gartrell and Pottratz. These are guys that left the program better than when they found it.

Clackamas

From coach John Arntson:

Our overall record was 16-2. We lost our first game of the year to Barlow 2-1 in nine innings. We also lost a close game to Grant 1-0 the second-to-last week of the year.

During the final week we went 3-0 and beat some of the top teams in the state. We beat Westview (ranked No. 4 by PBR) 9-8 on Saturday, May 15. We then beat Lakeridge (No. 1 by PBR at the time) 2-1 on Monday, May 17. Finally, we beat Tualatin on Wednesday, May 19.

I sure wish we would have been able to have a true state tournament at the end of the year. I would’ve liked our chances a lot. Regardless, I am really proud of this team. They competed and worked hard all year long.

Cleveland

From coach Steve Geiszler:

Cleveland finished up the season winning 10 of its final 12 games. Arms and bats started to warm up the final couple of weeks and showed with some good wins. An overall good season for the Warriors.

Pitching was key this year. In six games we held opponents to 0 runs scored and three times to one run scored. The team’s total ERA was 2.54. Jesuit allowed only 48 runs while scoring 120.
