AURORA | This week local lawmakers cemented a timeline for filling an upcoming vacancy on the Aurora City Council and opened up applications to qualified residents of Ward II.
The opening comes after council member Nicole Johnston announced her resignation last month. She intends to move to Colorado Springs, she said, for a job and to bring her family closer together. Her last day will be June 14.
To qualify for the seat applicants must be:
- A registered elector
- A U.S. citizen
- Has lived in Ward II for at least a year prior to the appointment
- At least 21 years old
- Has no felonies
- Does not hold other elective public office or is a salaried employee of the city.
Ward II residents can apply for the seat by downloading the application here and submitting it to the Aurora City Clerk’s office via email, fax or mail.
Applications are due by May 20.
Ward II encompasses neighborhoods in northeast Aurora, from Buckley Air Force Base to housing developments that neighbor Denver International Airport, Star K Ranch and the Colorado Air and Space Port.
After the application deadline the city will host a virtual reception for applicants (mid-June) and a formal interview (June 21). This week during a city council study session some city council members opposed the timeline saying Johnston’s early notice allowed for the appointment process to move faster so that Ward II residents aren’t left without a direct representative. None of the at-large candidates live in Ward II, though they do represent the entire city.
A formal vote for the seat is slated for June 28 and the appointee will be sworn in during the July 12 city council meeting.
