SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 11-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded a 307 in Friday's opening round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club. The Bulldogs are tied for 20th place after playing in extremely blustery conditions in the afternoon.

On Saturday, the teams will flip tee times from the first round. Georgia will compete in the morning under what, if the weather holds true, should be considerably calmer conditions than Friday.

"It was tough," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The wind got up on us, and we had to battle. We're still in position. Sure, you'd like to be higher on the leaderboard, but tomorrow we get to start with calm conditions."

The No. 13-24 seeds played in the morning on Friday and those teams posted four of the top-5 scores on the day. No. 17 Texas shot 289, a stroke better than No. 13 Oregon. No. 6 Stanford is third, followed by No. 22 Arizona and No. 18 Kent State both at 292.

Sophomore Candice Mahé led the Bulldogs with a 1-under 73 which put her in a tie for 19th individually. Georgia also counted a 75 from Jenny Bae, a 78 from Caterina Don and an 81 from Isabella Holpfer, while dropping Jo Hua Hung's 82.

The Bulldogs were solid on the front side, covering the first eight holes at 5-over before a pair of bogeys at No. 9 to push that to 7-over. Georgia played the first three holes of the back nine at 7-over before settling in.

"It was really, really windy today, especially on the back nine," Mahé said. "I think the back nine can be really, really tough if you do not hit the ball in the right spot. I was trying to play my own game - fairway, green and two-putt. I really didn't putt well today because I did have a lot of birdie chances today and missed a lot of them."

Bae and Mahé birdied No. 17 and No. 18, respectively, to give the Bulldogs a late-day boost.

"We'll try to carry those last two holes over and have a fast start tomorrow," Brewer said. "We've played great on day two all season. That's sort of been this team's M.O."

In fact, the Bulldogs have compiled a team scoring average of 295.90 in first rounds this season and a 291.40 mark in second rounds, an improvement of 4.50 shots per round.

Georgia is tied with No. 8 Southern Cal, with No. 12 Baylor, No. 26 Alabama and No. 1 South Carolina rounding out the team field.

"We still have two more days," Mahé said. "It's something I think I will figure out. It will be fun and I'm excited about tomorrow playing with less wind."

After Sunday's third round, the field will be trimmed to 15 teams for a final day of stroke play. Following Monday, the top-8 teams will advance to a match play bracket to determine the national champion.

Georgia will again be paired with Arizona State and Baylor, teeing off from No. 10 in 11-minute increments between 10:36-11:20 a.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
