CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Western Carolina softball travels to UNCG this weekend in a key Southern Conference series at UNCG. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
GAME NOTES
The two teams are battling to host the upcoming 2021 Southern Conference Championship May 13-15. Western Carolina needs just one win in the series to earn the right to bring the championships to Cullowhee. The Spartans would need to sweep the Catamounts to assure the championship will be played in Greensboro.
As of now, Western Carolina and UNCG are the only two teams who have secured a spot in the four-game conference championship. Furman, Chattanooga, Mercer, and Samford are all battling this weekend for the third and fourth spots.
AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE CATAMOUNTS:
- Western Carolina UNCG meets for the 47th, 48th, and 49th times this weekend. The Spartans hold a slight edge of 26-20 over WCU. However, the Catamounts have a winning record at UNCG 12-11. The two teams last met in 2019 playing two of the three-game of the series with Western Carolina sweeping the doubleheader 8-3, 4-3. WCU has taken the conference series over UNCG, in Greensboro, in three of the last four meetings at the Spartans.
- The Catamounts are on a six-game winning streak. Its longest streak of the season was a new school record 11 games from Mar. 28 through April 17 snapped with a 6-0 loss at Mercer in the final game of the three-game series.
- Before opening Southern Conference play, Western Carolina had a record of 5-15 after a doubleheader loss to Appalachian State on Mar. 23. Since that loss, the Catamounts have a record of 20-6.
- Sophomore pitcher Jayme Eilers has 166 career strikeouts which rank ninth in the WCU record books for most strikeouts in a career. For the season, she has 143 strikeouts making her the 13th Catamount pitcher in program history to have 100 or more strikeouts in a season ranking and ranks eighth in the WCU record books and leads the Southern Conference this season. Her 17 complete games this season ranks fourth in the WCU record books for the most complete games in a season. She has been named SoCon Pitcher of the Week twice this season.
- Western Carolina has 300 hits as a team, which is second in the conference. The Catamounts also lead the SoCon in earned run average (3.11).
- A front-runner for SoCon Player of the Year Bailey Huneycutt leads the Southern Conference in batting average (.393) and home runs (14) and ranks second in hits (48) and runs scored (33) and fourth in RBI (32) – tied with her teammate Kailey McNeil.
- Huneycutt has reached base safely in the last 29 games and is chasing the program record for consecutive games reaching base safely which was set by Nikki Bost in 2007 with 30.

AN INSIDE LOOK AT THE SPARTANS:
- UNCG enters this weekend after winning two of three games at Mercer last weekend.
- Both teams bring the respective SoCon Player and Pitcher of the Weeks into this series. UNCG's Kayleigh Willis was the Player of the Week while the Catamounts Eilers is the reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week.
- The Spartans also have the second-best player in the conference in Makenna Matthijs who is just behind the Catamounts Huneycutt. Matthijs leads the SoCon in hits (52), runs (39), and RBIs (36) while Huneycutt, as stated above, paces the SoCon in the power numbers.
