PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's basketball team will return to the court for the first time in almost three weeks on Monday night. The Towson Tigers open the new year with their annual visit in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. The game can be seen live nationally on the CBS Sports Network. Scott Graham and former UConn standout Donny Marshall will have the call beginning at 6 p.m. The 2021-22 Drexel men's basketball season is presented by IBEW 98.
THE SERIES
Today is the 76th meeting in the series between the Dragons and the Tigers. Drexel leads the all-time series, 49-26. The teams first met during the 1969-70 season. Last year, the two meetings were canceled due to the pandemic. The Tigers enter today's game with a three-game winning streak against the Dragons and have won nine of the last 20 meetings.
ABOUT DREXEL
The Dragons are 5-5 after defeating Coppin State on Dec. 14, 76-69. Lamar Oden, making his first starting assignment, led Drexel with 15 points. Camren Wynter and Amari Williams each added 12 points. James Butler had another double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. It was Drexel's final non-conference home game of 2021. The Dragons had their last four schedule games postponed, including the first two schedule CAA games at Charleston and at UNCW.
Through 10 games, James Butler leads the team and is second in the CAA with 14.5 points per game. He is also the leading rebounder in the league with 10.3. The graduate student is shooting .591 from the floor. Camren Wynter averages 14.0 points and is tied for third in the CAA in assists per game. Sophomore Xavier Bell (10.1) is also in double figures scoring.
ABOUT THE TIGERS
The Tigers enter today's game with a three-game winning streak. They defeated Coppin State, UNC Greensboro and Navy during the run. Towson has a balanced offense with four players averaging at least 10 points per game. Nicolas Timberlake leads the way with 14.5 points per game and has a team-high 28 3-pointers. Cameron Holden scores 13.8 per game and leads the team with 9.5 rebounds.
In typical Towson fashion, the Tigers lead the league in rebounding margin at +6.5 and are in the top 50 in the nation in that category.
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel will have a short turnaround as JMU makes its final visit as a member of the CAA on Wednesday night. The Dragons and the Dukes split their two regular season meetings in 2021. The game will tip-off at 7 p.m.
