Syracuse, N.Y. — Lord & Taylor says it plans to close all 38 of its stores but hopes to sell the best performing ones if it can find buyers for them.

The department store chain’s owner, Le Tote, filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11 of U.S. Bankruptcy Code on Sunday. In its filing, the company disclosed that it has hired two liquidation specialists, Hilco Merchants Resources and Gordan Brothers Retail Partners, to hold closing sales at all 38 of its stores. (See full list below.)

At the same time, Le Tote said it will put all the company’s assets up for auction in hopes that a buyer can be found for some of its most profitable stores. The company said it is unlikely a retail buyer will purchase all its stores.

Store closing signs went up at many of the company’s stores Monday morning, including the one at Syracuse’s Destiny USA, the largest mall in New York and sixth largest in the nation.

Founded in 1826, Lord & Taylor is the oldest department store chain in the country. But Le Tote said the chain for the past several years has faced a “challenging commercial environment brought on by adverse macro-trends, including increased competition among both online retailers and established brick-and-mortar retailers” with less debt and greater economies of scale. It’s also been hurt by the consumer shift away from shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, the company said.

“These factors have been greatly compounded by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic that has caused retailers throughout the country to close their doors,” the company said.

The chain has slowly begun to reopen its stores as states and local jurisdictions have begun to relax stay-at-home orders.

“Nevertheless, foot traffic has declined significantly compared to pre-COVID levels,” the retailer said. “Given the expenses associated with a substantial brick-and-mortar presence, and the issues affecting the retail industry and the nation as a whole, a significant number of the debtors’ stores are operating at sub-optimal performance levels.”
