As families look for opportunities to get outdoors during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are new options in Santa Clara.
The city has opened or updated a number of public facilities during the pandemic, opening a major new park Wednesday.
“Parks are vital to a thriving community, and we are proud to provide some of the best parks and playgrounds in the state,” said Santa Clara Mayor Lisa M. Gillmor.
Reed and Grant Sports Park officially opened on October 22, with first permitted use Wednesday, October 28. At 9.75 acres, it includes five sports fields – all with lights, multipurpose buildings, a playground, and restrooms. Four of the four fields are synthetic turf, aimed at reducing water usage and maintenance costs.
“For all park projects in Santa Clara, we use research based, best practices, include all the elements of play to support the physical, cognitive and social growth needs of all ages and abilities, while integrating them with the natural habitat, and using sustainable materials,” said James Teixeira, Director of Santa Clara’s Parks & Recreation Department.
Other Santa Clara city parks have seen major upgrades during in 2020:
- Agnew Park – A new climbing playground with slides, swings, and climbing wall.
- Fuller Park – A new volleyball court, half basketball court, and fitness equipment. It also has new accessibility improvements.
- Machado Park – A new playground, with separate areas for different age ranges, slides, swings, merry-go-round, and climbing elements. It also features barbeque grills.
- Meadow Park – New play spaces, with a meadow and redwood trail, restrooms, and a group picnic area.
