Brock Holt: ‘Little strange’ Boston Red Sox never came close to making contract offer in free agency last off - MassLive.com

Brock Holt expected the Boston Red Sox to show more interest in him during free agency last offseason.

Holt signed a one-year, $3.25-million contract with the Brewers in February. Milwaukee designated him for assignment Aug. 22, then released him Aug. 27.

He signed with the Nationals and joined Washington at Fenway Park on Saturday. Boston played a tribute video to honor him Sunday.

“I didn’t really hear from the Red Sox this year, which was a little strange to me,” Holt said. “It was one of those things, first time through free agency, didn’t really know what to expect. Figured I would get a phone call or something. They called a couple times just checking in, but it was never even really close to offering. I think early on in the process I knew it was probably the end. ... That’s just the way things worked out. Obviously, the Brewers was a good situation and just didn’t work out there. Now I’m here so we’ll do the best we can and just see what happens.”

Holt was a fan favorite in Boston and was a productive hitter. He became the first player in Major League Baseball history to hit for the cycle during the postseason. He did it Oct. 8, 2018, against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in Game 3 of the ALDS.

Holt batted .271 with a .340 on-base percentage in 639 games for the Red Sox from 2013-19. He batted .297 with a .369 on-base percentage, .402 slugging percentage, .771 OPS, 14 doubles, two triples, three homers and 31 RBIs in 87 games (295 plate appearances) in 2019.

“That’s part of the business of baseball,” Holt said. “That’s the sucky part of it but that happens. Sometimes, it’s time to move on. It’s tough to see because we were so close and such a fun group of guys to be a part of. That’s something we’ll have forever. I’m super close still with every single one of those guys and wish them nothing but the best. That’s baseball. Things happen and teams rebuild. That’s what the Red Sox are doing right now.”

Holt and his wife Lakyn Holt have done a ton of work for the Jimmy Fund over the years.

“Me and my wife fell in love with the city and got involved in some organizations that meant a lot to us,” he said. “Just being here year-round was something that made sense. Still have our house here, my wife’s pregnant and is about to have a baby. She didn’t really want to leave this year.”

Holt said it’s weird seeing the visiting side of Fenway Park.

“It’s pretty cool, they’ve got a cool setup over here,” he said. “I think the clubhouse is actually nicer now than it is normally. It’s weird. Everyone’s like, ‘Hey, you know where the cage is?’ I’m like, ‘No, I have no idea. I don’t know where anything is over here.’ It’s cool to be back. I drove over yesterday or two days ago to get my COVID test and went back home, was waiting for the results. It just happened to work out. This is a special place for me so to be here right now, it’s pretty cool.”
