Tropical Storm Isaias is shutting down the beach.
The National Park Service will close the Sandy Hook section of Gateway National Recreation Area on Tuesday out of an abundance of caution as the storm is expected to pass over New Jersey.
The closure announcement came Monday after Gov. Phil Murphy warned the public during his regular coronavirus briefing that the state could see flooding from heavy rain and high winds as Isaias passes through the region.
Murphy specifically cautioned that rip currents and flooding will pose a threat during the storm, and he urged people swimming to heed the guidance of lifeguards.
“By tomorrow night, this storm should be away from us, and the coming days will help us dry out after tomorrow,” Murphy said. “But again, for tomorrow, plan to just stay in and stay safe.”
State parks remain open, but could close depending on conditions.
“The State Park Service is mindful of the approaching storm and making preparations accordingly,” said Caryn Shinske, spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. “Decisions will be made on an as-needed basis.”
The Garden State could start feeling the effects of Isaias as early as Monday evening.
A tropical storm warning and flash flood watch have been issued for all of New Jersey’s 21 counties. That watch begins Monday evening for the majority of the state, though watches in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union counties don’t begin until Tuesday morning.
The heaviest rain is expected in the northwest corner of the state, with four to six inches forecast for portions of Hunterdon, Warren, Sussex and Morris counties.
Isaias is expected to bring 40 mph sustained winds to coastal areas, with gusts up to 60 mph. Inland gusts may reach up to 55 mph. Widespread power outages are expected in New Jersey.
