January 6, 2021; Washington, D.C. — NPR has opened applications for its Reflect America Fellowship, a year-long reporting and producing position aimed at bringing a greater diversity of voices to NPR's news coverage. Applications are open until 11:59 EST p.m. on Feb. 12, 2021.
During the 12-month fellowship, the Reflect America fellow will work with journalists across the Newsroom and Programming to find, cultivate and vet sources who are often missing from media coverage, ensuring that those voices make it into NPR's news programs on the air, in podcasts and across all digital platforms. The fellow will spend the final three months of the fellowship reporting with one of NPR's news teams.
"We've seen great energy and change at NPR since launching this fellowship, and our fellows have played a big role in that growth," said Keith Woods, NPR's Chief Diversity Officer. "We're excited to see the ideas and innovation that the next fellow will bring to the work."
NPR has had two successful fellows to date. Pien Huang, the inaugural fellow, helped the NPR Science desk craft a sourcing strategy. She now reports on health for NPR and has been a significant voice in coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Current fellow Ashish Valentine has worked with reporters and producers on Weekend Edition, All Things Considered and the Business desk to include more diverse voices in their storytelling. In late January, he will start a final three-month reporting stint with the race & identity team on the National desk.
The Reflect America Fellowship builds on seven years of work to help NPR look and sound like America. In 2013, the network began tracking the race, ethnicity, gender and geographic location of its news sources on its two largest shows, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. NPR found that its sources were overwhelmingly white, male and located on the East and West coasts. And while the newsroom has made steady progress, a 2016 study of digital sources and more recent studies have found ongoing challenges.
Designed for an early- or mid-career journalist who wants to work and grow in one of the nation's most dynamic newsrooms, the Reflect America Fellowship is one of three fellowships offered by NPR. The others are the Kroc Fellowship, a year-long program to train the next generation of public media journalists, and the Above the Fray Fellowship, dedicated to covering under-reported international stories.
