Saturday's third round of the Farmers Insurance Open turned wild when the leaders made the turn at Torrey Pines. With a big lead and a shot to put the tournament away, Patrick Reed got himself into yet another rules situation on the par-4 10th hole. Though he co-leads going into Sunday's finale, the big story in Round 3 was whether he broke yet another rule.
The verbal gymnastics he dropped after the round did not help things, and this narrative will likely overshadow what should be a fantastic finale, especially if Reed goes on to win. We did a deep dive on what happened, what Reed said and what it all means right here.
Despite all that, Reed went on to shoot a 2-under 70 on Saturday and will try to win for the ninth time in his PGA Tour career on Sunday with a ton of massive names chasing him. Let's take a look back at how Saturday's third round went and what's on deck for Sunday.
T1. Patrick Reed, Carlos Ortiz (-10): Lost in the Reed madness was the fact that Ortiz shot the round of the day by two strokes and gained nearly eight on the field. His confidence should be high after winning the Houston Open at the end of 2020. Ortiz was magnificent from tee to green on Sunday, gaining over five strokes on the field en route to his stunning 66. Reed will be absolutely jacked up to vindicate himself on Sunday after the mess that was on Saturday.
T3. Sam Burns, Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm, Lanto Griffin, Adam Scott (-8): This group was collectively just 1 under in Round 3, but that was good enough for all of them to get within two of the leaders with 18 holes left. Rahm and Scott have both finished in the top two here before, and will be difficult for Ortiz and Reed to hold off.
T8. Sam Ryder, Rory McIlroy, Will Zalatoris, Ryan Palmer (-7): Justin Ray has a fun stat if you're interested in any of this group. Rory has been fabulous this week on the South Course and leads the field in strokes gained off the tee and from tee to green. If the putter pops on Sunday -- and I think it will after two pretty mediocre days from him on Thursday and Saturday -- he should better his top-five finish from 2020.
T12. Xander Schauffele, Henrik Norlander, Peter Malnati, Robby Shelton, Tony Finau (-6): Two guys who love chasing here just four back of the lead. Schauffele and Finau are probably at their best when they're a bit back of the lead and not frontrunning, and Finau especially has been immense on this course over the last few years. He's staring at yet another top-10 finish (and maybe better) over the next day.
