PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team would have been in good shape if the 11th and 15th holes didn't exist, but they did and the end result was the Buffaloes landing in 14th place after the first round here Friday of the annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
 
No. 24 Kansas owns the team lead through 18 holes with a 14-under par team score of 274, with No. 39 Georgia Tech two back at 12-under 276.  Charlotte (277), Oregon (278) and UCLA (285) round out the top five.
 
The Buffaloes, ranked 72nd early on, recorded an 8-over par 296 and are 14th in the 21-team field.  CU made the turn at 4-under but played the back nine at 12-over.
 
"We were in a great spot through 10 holes, 4- or 5-under par," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "From then on, we just played poorly the remainder of the round and frankly messed up a few pretty easy holes.  We've got to continue to work through the parts of the rounds we struggle just to manage them, and we didn't do a good job of that.  However, we did have a good practice session afterward and are ready for tomorrow."
 
Two holes in particular did the Buffs in on Friday, as the four players who contributed to the team score were 6-over par on both the 459-yard 11th and 349-yard 15th, both par-4s.  They were 3-under on the other five holes down the stretch.
 
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin and sophomore Adam Matteson led the Buffs on Friday, as each turned in an even par round on the 7,322-yard, par-72 Classic Club course.  O'Loughlin achieved his score with three birdies and 13 pars, with one bogey and one double, while Matteson tied for the team-high in birdies with four, along with 11 pars, two bogeys and a double.  Both made the turn at 1-under and played the back nine at 1-over and are tied for 32nd.
 
Junior John Paterson and redshirt freshman Canon Olkowski fashioned 4-over 76s, which has the pair tied for 73rd.   Paterson turned at 2-under and was untracked by one hole, a quadruple bogey on No. 15, otherwise had two birdies, 13 pars and two bogeys.  Olkowski suffered a near similar fate, as he was even through 10 and then scored a triple on No. 11; he matched Matteson with a team-best four birds with eight pars and five bogeys.
 
Senior Victor Bjorlow was off his game from the start, opening with a double and bogey en route to a 43 on the front side; he had one birdie, 10 pars, five bogeys and two doubles for his round, but the birdie did come on his last hole of the day.
 
Two Buffaloes are competing here individually.  Junior Kristoffer Max, who had his struggles earlier in the week in The Prestige at PGA West (25-over par), righted his ship with an even-par 72 Friday. He had four birdies and 10 pars against four bogeys to open his play here.  Senior Cole Krantz, playing in his first event of the season, shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 67th; he had a team- and tournament-high 16 pars with a bogey and a double.
 
Paterson and Max played the tough par-3s here at 1-under, tied for second-best in the field; only 54 birdies were recorded out of the 480 played on Friday.
 
Kansas' Luke Kluver fired a 7-under 65 to own the individual lead, with Oregon's Tom Gueant two back with a 67; several others are three off the pace with 4-under 68s.
 
The second round is set for Saturday; Colorado will be paired with Florida Atlantic, Seattle and CSU-Northridge and will begin to tee off on the 10th hole at 8 a.m. MDT.  The third and final round is Sunday.
 
NOTES: The second round in this tournament has been good to the Buffaloes, it was on this very same course in 2017 that they set the school record for the lowest score for a single round – a 22-under par 266 … Through 18 holes, Colorado is 12th in birdies (14) and eighth in pars (55) … The Buffs played the par-3 holes 2-over (tied for fifth in the field), the par-4 holes at 18-over (tied for 17th) and the par-5's at 4-under (tied for ninth) … The average score for 120 rounds on Friday was 74.42 …  All participants (coaches and players) had to have a negative PCR test for COVID-19 within 72 hours of competition.
