Saturday's Australian Open women's final features the consensus next great player and an opponent who has accomplished something that hasn't been done since the late 1980s. No. 3 seed Naomi Osaka, who is three of three in the Grand Slam finals she's played in, takes on No. 22 seed Jennifer Brady, the first woman to go from college to a Grand Slam final since Kathy Jordan did so in Melbourne in 1987.
Osaka's arrival to the final (3:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2, stream on fuboTV -- try for free) happened after a two-setwin sweep against the 23-year-old's longtime idol, Serena Williams. Though she took the match 6-3, 6-4, it wasn't exactly a cakewalk to this position as Osaka faced break point down 0-2 to Williams in the first set of the semifinal, with the crowd quickly hopping on the side of the greatest to ever play the sport.
Brady was, by her own admission, so overconfident in her semifinal match against Karolina Muchova that she was thinking about what her post-match celebration would be well before the final point was secured in her favor. In her three-set victory, she wasted four match point opportunities before finally taking the whole thing 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Though it wasn't exactly the most perfect win, it was only the second time she had made it to a Grand Slam semifinal in her career, and a victory means that it went a lot better than the first time.
The first time Brady had arrived to a Grand Slam semi was at last year's US Open, when she faced her Saturday opponent. Osaka went on to win that match, and later the whole tournament. The ending of this next chapter, however, will be determined today.
