Bay Area retailer Fry's Electronics will close all of its stores permanently, according to KRON4.
The retail electronics chain, which currently has more than two dozen stores across nine states, is expected to officially announce the news on its website Wednesday morning, according to the report.
No reason was given for the apparent closures.
The company was originally founded by the three Fry brothers, who invested their cut of the profits after father Charles sold California's Fry's Supermarkets chain in the early 1970s. They opened their first electronics store in Sunnyvale in 1985, and it would bill itself as a one-stop shop for Silicon Valley types in the 1980s and '90s.
An iconic Bay Area institution, the chain has experienced trouble recently, closing its Wild West-themed Palo Alto store on Portage Avenue in December 2019, followed by the shuttering of its ancient Egyptian-themed Campbell location on E. Hamilton Avenue in November 2020.
There had been widespread speculation late last year about Fry's closures across the country. Shoppers at Fry's around the Bay Area had commented on empty shelves, as it seemed the company was no longer restocking many items. The company had steadfastly denied the chain is going out of business, chalking up blank spots to simple restocking delays.
The Bay Area has four Fry's left: Concord, Fremont, San Jose and Sunnyvale.
