Senior Chett Clark led wire-to-wire as the Newport Harbor boys’ cross-country team defeated Los Alamitos 26-30 on Saturday in a nonleague dual meet.
Junior Luke Grunburg (16:37) and senior Moses Poe (16:39) helped the Sailors claim the top three spots with strong kicks at the end of the race, Newport Harbor boys’ cross-country coach Nowell Kay said.
Marina 27, Ocean View 28: Parker Walpole (16:32) and Diego Gonzalez (16:49) grabbed the top two spots for the Seahawks at home, but the Vikings eked out a team victory.
Vincent Beaumont (16:54), Neal Dorawala (16:57) and Jeremy Flores (17:28) finished in the top five for Marina.
Fountain Valley 15, Westminster 50: Dezi Hernandez won the race in 15:29.1 as the host Barons posted the minimum team points in Saturday’s Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meet.
Benjamin Prado (16:06.9), Shane Hill (16:34.3), Diego Alonso (16:43.3) and Jaden Nguyen (16:45.3) rounded out the scoring quintet for Fountain Valley.
Crean Lutheran 24, Laguna Beach 31: Jean Shorts earned the individual win for the Breakers with a time of 16:12.9, edging out Hayden Rivas (16:15.0) of the host Saints on Saturday afternoon.
Dylan Zevnik (17:22.0) also finished fifth for Laguna Beach.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Laguna Beach 17, Crean Lutheran 46: Melanie Falkowski (first, 17:52.4) and Grace Wilson (second, 17:58.2) both broke 18 minutes in leading the visiting Breakers in Saturday’s nonleague dual meet.
Coco Reed placed third in 18:16.0.
Fountain Valley 15, Westminster 50: Kaho Cichon, a returning Daily Pilot Dream Team selection, cruised to a winning time of 17:47.3 as the host Barons posted a perfect team score.
Lauren Berg (18:07.6), Leah Ferris (18:25.6), Kierra Tallas (19:25.5) and Samantha Martinez (19:29.2) filled out the scoring five for Fountain Valley.
Marina 17, Ocean View 46: Marikay Schwab ran 18:06, winning the race by 44 seconds, in Saturday’s season-opening Huntington Beach Union High School District dual meet.
Makena Castillo also delivered a strong performance with a time of 18:50 for the Vikings, while Elizabeth King (fourth, 19:47) paced the Seahawks.
Los Alamitos 25, Newport Harbor 31: Freshman Emma Scheumann paced the visiting Sailors with a time of 18:18 in finishing second in Saturday’s nonleague dual meet.
Sophomore Leanna Tamura placed fourth exactly a minute behind Scheumann.
