No. 66 and host Stanford is in the lead after posting a 5-under 275 score, good for a three-stroke edge on No. 8 Arizona State (278). No. 62 San Diego and No. 95 Denver are tied for third, four back at 279, with No. 98 Washington State rounding out the top five with an even par total of 280. Between the quintet, they had 11 of the 36 scores of par or better among their scorers on Thursday.
Colorado, ranked No. 74 by Golfweek, finished with a 16-over team score of 296, placing the Buffs 22nd in the 28-team field, which includes 23 of the nation's top 100-ranked schools. CU was 1-under par for the first 15 minutes or so on the day after Adam Matteson opened with a birdie, but would record 15 bogeys and double before the next birdie would be recorded.
Junior John Paterson turned in CU's best effort on the day, as he shot par (36-34) on the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course layout. One-under at the turn, he opened the back nine with three straight bogeys before gathering himself and had two birdies down the stretch, both coming on par-3s, to get back to even par. He had a team-best four birdies and 10 pars to counter four bogeys overall to stand tied for 20th place. He birdied three of the four par-3s, and at 3-under for those holes, is the only one in the field to do so on Thursday.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin is tied for 88th, after fashioning a 5-over 75, making the turn at plus-4 and then bogeying two of the first three holes; he went on to score his first and only birdie of the day on the par-3 14th hole before closing with four straight pars. He had a team-high 12 pars on the round, with four bogeys and a rare double, just his 43rd hole worse than bogey in now 1,998 he has played as a Buffalo.
Senior Cole Krantz also carded a 75, getting off to a rough start with six bogeys on the front nine to make the turn with a 41; he then rebounded to score all three of his birdies on the back nine, two coming down the stretch. He had seven pars and eight bogeys in addition to his birdie count.
Matteson, a sophomore, fired a 6-over 76, which has him tied for 100th. He bookended his round with a birdie on No. 1 and on No. 16, but in-between logged six bogeys and a double.
Senior Victor Bjorlow opened up with an 8-over 78, which has him tied for 119th. He has had troubles getting out of the gate to open meets this year (77 first round average), but to his credit, has bounced back to average four strokes better in each round going forward. He had no birdies, 11 pars, six bogeys and a double on Thursday.
"We played really poorly as a group for about 12, 13 holes, then righted the ship a little bit coming in," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "John did a particularly nice job of doing that. Daniel was uncharacteristically off his game."
The Buffs collectively had just four birdies on the first 13 holes, but came back with six over the last five, the four designated scorers reducing the potential score for the round down to 16-over.
Two players are tied for the individual lead with 7-under par 63s, St. Mary's Blake Hathcoat and Nevada's Sam Harned. Denver's Jackson Solem is one back after opening with a 64; they are three of 19 players under par, with another 17 who turned in even par rounds.
The second round is set for Friday, with the Buffaloes to be paired a second straight day with conference mates California and UCLA as well as St. Mary's. They'll start play off the No. 10 tee at 2:20 p.m. MDT. The third and final round is set for Saturday, with the top 15 teams to play in the afternoon and the rest of the field in the morning.
NOTES: This is the eighth time the Buffaloes are playing in the event, with their best finish a fourth-place showing in 2016 … The Buffaloes are 11th in par-3 scoring (6-over), tied for 23rd in par-4 scoring (21-over) and tied for 13th in par-5 scoring (minus-3) … CU is tied for 14th in pars (49) and is tied for 18th in birdies (10) … The average score for the tournament (146 total rounds) after day one is 73.48.
