Prestianne Leads All Players with 13 Points
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Host Washington College scored nine of the game's final 10 points to turn a 55-50 deficit into a 59-56 win against visiting Southern Virginia on Friday afternoon at Penny J. Fall Gymnasium in a women's basketball exhibition.
Barrett Jessop put the Knights ahead 55-50 with 2:22 left in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer. Lizzie Hudock would begin the game-closing run with a layup with 1:44 to go in the game. Following a turnover by Southern Virginia, Crystal Jones, who forced the turnover with a steal, would tie the game at 55-55 on a three-pointer with 53 seconds left. The Knights turned it over again on their next possession and Hudock put the Shorewomen ahead for good at 57-55 on a lay-in with 20 seconds remaining. The Knights' Eliza Galbreath was fouled with 10 seconds left, but she could only convert one free throw that trimmed the Shorewomen's lead to 57-56. Andrea Prestianne would can two from the foul line with eight seconds left to make it 59-56 and cap the scoring. Southern Virginia's last chance to tie it was a three-point try by Galbreath and it was off the mark. Washington outscored Southern Virginia 34-26 in the second half as the guests led 30-25 at halftime.
Prestianne scored 13 points to lead all players, while Jones added 12 points and Hudock chipped in with 10 points. Gemma Mochi, who was honored prior to the game as the Shorewomen's lone senior on Senior Day, grabbed eight rebounds to tie for game-high. For Southern Virginia, Gretchen Olsen had 10 points to lead the Knights. Galbreath hauled down eight boards and Emma Camden had a contest-best four steals.
The two teams will play again at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow on the campus of Washington College.
