UCLA women's basketball coach Cori Close has been named FIBA U19 World Cup Head Coach for Team USA.
This will be Close's fourth stint with Team USA. Most recently, Close was an assistant on the 2019 USA team which won the gold medal in the 219 FIBA U19 World Cup.
In this incarnation of Team USA, Close will be joined by Aaron Johnston head coach of South Dakota State and Joni Taylor Georgia Head Coach.
The U19 trials will be held from May 14-16 to determine the 12-person roster. The FIBA 2021 World Cup will take place from August 7-15 in Hungary. Team USA will compete in Group A which consists of Australia, Egypt, and Italy. Preliminary completion will take place between August 7 and 10.
Working the national team has not only given Close a chance to observe national talent but international talent as she has been able to recruit players from all over the globe which include Chantel Horvat and Izzy Anstey (Australia), Emily Bessoir (Germany), Brynn Masikewich (Canada), and newcomer Marta Morales (Spain) just to name a few.
Close recently closed out her 10th season with UCLA as the Bruins finished the season 17-6, 12-4. It was the Bruins fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for Close. UCLA had also made it to the 2021 Pac-12 Championship Game though unfortunately fell to the eventual NCAA Champion Stanford Cardinal.
Next season, the Bruins reload with key players that missed out on last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and return one of the top scorers in the Pac-12 last season as Charisma Osborne looks to lead the Bruins in 2021-22.
