FAIRMONT — Offering healthy shakes, teas and coffees, 5Lakes Nutrition is now open in Fairmont. The shop, owned by Brittany Fowler, is located at 103 W. Blue Earth Avenue.
The store opened last week and will be open Monday-Friday from 6 a.m. — 2 p.m. Fowler said they’ll keep those hours for about a month and then will re-evaluate and possibly add in Saturday hours as well.
Fowler was born and raised in Swea City, Iowa, and still lives there on a farm with her family.
She is a registered nurse and was most recently working as a level one trauma nurse at Hennepin County Medical Center, but reduced her hours there to focus on her businesses.
Fowler also owns Vital Cryotherapy and Wellness in Fairmont. It opened in January of this year at a different location and just last week moved next door to 5Lakes Nutrition.
“We do localized cryotherapy for pain and injury, cellulite reduction, cryofacials, scar reduction. We have an infrared sauna which has a million health benefits and we also do IV vitamin hydration therapy,” Fowler said.
Fowler explained why she wanted to open 5Lakes Nutrition.
“I’ve always been a big advocate for health and wellness and nutrition and exercise. I did health and fitness coaching for five years and decided to add the nutrition piece to the wellness business and this is the route I chose.”
Fowler said that for about eight weeks before 5Lakes Nutrition opened, they were holding pop-up shops.
“We would do it once a week from 6-8 a.m. and 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. We would offer two shakes and two teas and everyone would pre-order. It was very successful and the community really loved it,” Fowler said.
Fowler said she views the menu at 5Lakes Nutrition as healthy fast food.
“It’s a good option to swing in on your lunch break or grab before you go to work,” she said.
They currently offer 15 different flavors of shakes, with vanilla, chocolate or peanut cookie based protein. Each shake has 21 vitamins and minerals, and around 24 grams of protein and they have no added sugar.
“They can be used as a snack or a meal replacement, depending on your nutrition needs,” Fowler said.
TeaBombs are also on the menu. They have about 165 mg of caffeine and Fowler said they help boost metabolism, provide good energy and they’re sugar free.
“It’s really like the healthy version of an energy drink,” she said.
They also have protein coffees which can be hot or cold.
Fowler said they have some kid options on the menu as well. They have kid blasts, which have no caffeine or sugar, but provide good hydration.
“It’s really been a hit. It’s been great to see the kids and families come in,” Fowler said.
Healthy snacks will be available in the near future, such as peanut butter balls and other protein balls.
“The menu will change and grow. There are seasonal shakes we’ll do for different times of the year,” Fowler explained.
Fowler stressed that 5Lakes Nutrition offers more than just shakes and tea bombs. She said it’s more of a nutrition club.
“We’ll eventually add different things, like healthy nutritional challenges and Saturday morning yoga classes. We also do three-day jump starts which help you get kickstarted and re-focus your nutrition. People lose on average two to 12 pounds. There’s a supportive group and I’m your coach,” Fowler said.
Fowler said she took control of the space in May and began working on it soon after that.
They put in all new flooring, painted the walls, put in the large chalkboard menu and installed the counter and small kitchen space.
“It’s been a lot of work. A lot of late nights,” she said.
There are counters along the walls and Fowler said stools will be coming soon so that people can sit and stay to work or just hang out.
One of Fowler’s favorite things is the inspirational theme wall which is a large chalkboard on the wall that people can write on. The question for the first week was ‘what makes you happy?’
“I want this to be more than just a place where people come and get a shake and tea bomb. I want you to leave here feeling fantastic. Maybe you come in and your day’s not going great, but I want you to leave feeling a little bit better,” Fowler said.
Updates on hours and the menu can be found on Facebook or Instagram at 5Lakes Nutrition.
