(KNSI) – An announcement parents, parishioners, and staff knew had been coming for months was made official on Saturday, May 1st. Holy Cross School in Marty will close at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.
A news release from the Diocese says, “After much consultation and reflection, Bishop Donald Kettler has directed the pastor of Holy Cross Church to lead the parish in a discernment process focused on transforming its parochial school into a new ministry better suited to the gifts and resources of the community.”
In the release, Bishop Donald Kettler issued a statement saying, “The school has provided many generations of families with a solid education grounded in Gospel values. I know this is a difficult time for families, staff and parishioners who love their school. But it has been facing considerable challenges for some time due to changing demographics, diminishing enrollments and other barriers to long-term operational vitality. These trends underscore the challenges regarding the school’s solvency and sustainability. This was not an easy decision to make, but I believe it is in the best interests of the parish and respects the principles of good stewardship. I continue to pray for the school and parish community during this time of change and transition.”
Sources told KNSI that Bishop Kettler issued a decree April 7th, ordering the school to close. We reached out to the Diocese asking for confirmation of the closure, but did not receive a confirmation, only a statement saying, “Bishop Kettler has convened a process regarding the future of the school and will speak about it in the near future.”
The Pastor of Holy Cross, Father Matthew Crane sent a letter to parents, parishioners and staff on April 30th, and obtained by KNSI saying Bishop Kettler had “affirmed his decision in response to a recent petition asking him to revoke the decree.”
Teachers, staff, and students will all receive assistance from Catholic Community Schools in finding “future opportunities in Catholic education.”
