BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State football team will square off against Utah State Saturday, in the latest start to a season in the history of the program as a four-year institution.
The Broncos and Aggies are slated to kick at 5:10 p.m. at Albertsons Stadium, and the game will be nationally televised by FS1. The Mountain West announced on Sept. 24 the return of a fall 2020 season after initially announcing its postponement, Aug. 10.
NEW TV CONTRACT
Boise State fans will need to adjust their television sets beginning in 2020. Per the Mountain West's new television contract, all Bronco home games will be broadcast on the FOX family of networks – either FOX, FS1 or FS2. Bronco Nation should be familiar with the network, as each of Boise State's first two Fiesta Bowl victories – against Oklahoma in 2007 and TCU in 2010 – were broadcast on FOX. Boise State has also played on FS1 on two occasions, at Washington in 2013 and at Oregon State in 2016.
SCHEDULE CHANGES
The Broncos lost four games from their initial 2020 schedule – three conference games and a divisional Mountain West opponent. Georgia Southern and Florida State were each supposed to travel to Albertsons Stadium, and the Broncos were set to visit Marshall and New Mexico. All four games are off the 2020 slate, and the Broncos' game against UNLV, originally scheduled to be played in Boise in 2020, was adjusted to a road game.
CONFERENCE OPENERS
Boise State has won 20-consecutive conference openers since a loss in 1999, when the Broncos fell 17-10 to North Texas (Oct. 16) as a member of the Big West. The Broncos are 37-13 all-time in conference openers, including a mark of 21-3 when playing such games at home.
OPENING AT HOME
Boise State will open its season at home for the first time since Sept. 2, 2017, when the Broncos defeated Troy (24-13). Boise State has won 10-consecutive season openers played at home, dating back to a loss to Cal State Northridge, Aug. 30, 1997 (63-23), in a game that was later forfeited to the Broncos. The streak still stands at 10 not counting the forfeit, as the Broncos also lost their season opener at home in 1996 – to Central Michigan (42-21; Aug. 31) – in the school's first game as a member of what is now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision.
CONFERENCE RECORD
Since 2000, Boise State is a national-best 139-17 (.891) in conference regular-season play. Since joining the FBS in 1996, the Broncos have played in three leagues: the Big West (1996-2000), WAC (2001-10) and Mountain West (2011-Present). Over the campaigns in those three conferences, the Broncos have posted an all-time record of 149-26 (.851). Boise State went 5-3 in Mountain West play in 2015, just the second time since 1998 - when Boise State went 2-3 in the Big West - that the Broncos lost three conference contests in a season. It was also just the fourth time since 2001 - Boise State's first year in the WAC - that the Broncos lost multiple conference games (also went 6-2 in WAC play in 2001).
MW SUCCESS
Since joining the Mountain West for the 2011 season, Boise State has lost just 13 games against conference opponents, with only three of those losses being by more than seven points. Outside of a 28-14 loss to Air Force (Sept. 27, 2014), a 52-26 loss at Utah State (Oct. 16, 2015), and a 28-17 loss at Fresno State (Nov. 25), the Broncos' other 10 Mountain West losses (regular season games and conference championship game) have come by a combined 39 points. Boise State's four Mountain West losses from 2011-13 were by a combined seven points: TCU in 2011 (36-35); San Diego State in 2012 (21-19); Fresno State (41-40) and SDSU (34-31, OT) in 2013. Additionally, no Mountain West team has a winning record against the Broncos, although San Diego State is 3-3 against Boise State.
