2020 Memorial Tournament Field
Field: 156 Players | Top 65 and Ties Make the Cut after 36 Holes
First Tee: Thursday, July 23 at 8:00 a.m. ET
Defending Champion: Matthew Wolff
After two weeks in the Columbus suburbs, the players are making the 11-hour drive northwest to Minneapolis for the second incarnation of the 3M Open. Now, there had been a theory, mainly propagated by me, that the 2020 3M Open would see its strongest field ever because the elite players would take a pass on next week’s WGC in Memphis in fear of getting put in COVID-19 protocol and being forced to skip the PGA Championship. That was… incorrect. This field is one of the weakest of the year. Likely weaker than if the 3M had just run its regular spot in the schedule.
Now, the field isn’t completely devoid of top-end talent: Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau, Paul Casey and Bubba Watson will all grace TPC Twin Cities with their presence. That’s not…… bad. It is the first time we’re seeing Tommy Boy since the restart. So that’s a bonus. He was at Shinnecock Hills over the weekend and carded a 64, for what that’s worth.
The next tier is a YUGE drop off: Defending champ Matthew Wolff, Erik van Rooyen, Brendon Todd, Doc Redman, Harris English, Lucas Glover, Russell Henley, Henrik Norlander, Ryan Moore, Alex Noren, Chesson Hadley, Luke List, Sam Burns, Dylan Frittelli, Troy Merritt, Emiliano Grillo, Branden Grace, and Will Gordon are le creme of the rest. Matthias Schwab and Bernd Wiesberger are also back in the field this week, too. The EUROS made their first start stateside at last week’s Memorial. I’d imagine they’re expecting a better outing this time around.
Jason Kokrak is tentatively in the field, but he withdrew for unknown reasons from the Memorial last week. Grayson Murray has tested positive for COVID-19 and has already withdrawn from play.

2020 3M Open: Strategy
TPC Twin Cities hosted this newly minted event for the first time last year and now we’re getting a second go around. I actually got to walk the course last season and it’s pretty glaring where the danger lurks: 27 water hazards and 72 sand traps. Think of it as really easy PGA National. Avoid the aqua, score a lot. Only holes No. 5, 8, 13 and 15 are devoid of the essence of moisture.
This is a pure ball strikers course. That gets thrown around a lot, but it even showed up in the strokes gained metrics from a year ago. Be awesome with your irons, gain a few strokes off the tee, and don’t be an absolute train wreck on the bentgrass greens. Four of the top seven finishers a year ago gained less than a stroke with their putters. Including winner Matthew Wolff and runner up Collin Morikawa. Of course, a hot putter can run you up the leaderboard, it always can, but it’s going to be pointless if you can’t strike an iron.
The trickiest part is avoiding the land mines. As they’ll be pretty random. With so much water populating the grounds, one poorly judged approach can be the end of the week with so many other players going low.
The course was been lengthened over 300 yards from its appearances on the Champions Tour, and the fairways have been narrowed, but they’re not so thin it makes them difficult to hit. Last year the field hit 66% of fairways (TOUR average 60%) with the average driver going over 290 yards.
Three of the four par 3s measure over 204 yards. There are two par 4s over 500 yards, with a total of five extending over 450 yards. All three par 5s can generate eagles too; — No. 6 (1.7% Eagle Rate), No. 12 (3.2%), No. 18 (4.1).
Not sure exactly why, maybe it’s the field strength similarities, but there was an unbelievable amount of crossover from the 2019 3M Open leaderboard and the 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic leaderboard. It’s only one year of results, but it could be an angle to exploit. Stats leaderboard generated from Fantasy National.

2020 3M Open Picks — Targets From Each Range
Paul Casey
As will be the theme for the sections, it’s all the best ball strikers. Over the past 50 Rounds via Fantasy National, no one is better than the Brit in combined driving and irons. Even last week when he missed the cut on the number, he still gained a gauged 3.6 strokes ball striking. Maybe avoid the 8 on a par 3 next time, Paul. Even in his first start back from hiatus at Travelers, he gained 5.6 strokes ball striking. In a weaker field, Casey’s the best value amount the elite options.
Doc Redman
Redman has carded three consecutive top-25 finishes before forgetting how to putt at Memorial. Seriously. Even though he gained over three strokes ball striking in just two rounds, he lost an otherworldly six strokes on the greens. Now, Doc isn’t a great putter, but he had gained over three strokes with his flagstick in three of past six starts coming in. If Redman can continue striking it at an elite level and just middle around field average on the greens, he’s very live to win. And while he did miss the cut here a year ago, he has posted a 2nd and T21 in two Rocket Mortgage starts.
Erik van Rooyen
The South African, and University of Minnesota product, is another member of the all ball striking and can’t putt squad. EVR was second in the field at Memorial in SG: Approach, and fifth in T2G, and now gets to return to a familiar area of the country. Plus, this field is so weak, EVR will get lumped into the tier of regular TOUR grinders by the random spectator. He’s not. He’s actually the No. 43 player in the world.
Other notable names appearing near the top of stat models and the win simulator at FantasyNational.com: TBD Wednesday
