California public health officials battle a water park that won't close - SF Gate

For nearly two months, a back-and-forth battle has been waged between Shasta County health officials and the WaterWorks Park in Redding.

The latest salvo comes from the Shasta County Environmental Health Division, which announced over the weekend that it is revoking the park's public pool permit effective July 27. The permit rejection is due to "an immediate threat to public health and safety," the county health department wrote in a press release.

"Each day the park is open, large numbers of unrelated people, some from outside the area, gather in the park without social distancing or face coverings," the release reads. "The public is advised to not use WaterWorks Park pool facilities at this time," it continues.

WaterWorks Park has been open since June 5, a violation of the state's coronavirus guidance. According to state rules, water parks are not allowed to operate due to the risk of spreading COVID-19. On July 10, the Shasta County Health Department says it directed the park to close until further notice. A few days later, WaterWorks CEO Joseph Murphy released his own statement, saying the park would remain open until August and maintaining the park is following CDC guidelines.

"Don’t Ruin The Fun For Everyone!" a banner on the WaterWorks website reads. "Face masks are now required in line for: Entrance, Tickets, Food, Tiki Hut & Gift Shop."

Due to "the edict from Governor Newsom," Murphy said WaterWorks will close for the season on August 3.
