FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Applications are now open for the fall 2020 Venture Intern Program, an internship that pairs students with startups, entrepreneurship support organizations, regional accelerator programs and investor networks across Northwest Arkansas for a semester.

An internship like no other, the University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation launched the program last spring, providing 24 students with exposure to the workings of early-stage companies.

"The goal of this program was to give students hands-on experience working in the innovative, fast-paced environment of a startup while providing early-stage companies access to student talent with little administrative burden," said Deb Williams, director of student programs at the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

"What students demonstrated in the Venture Intern Program is that they are capable, ready and excited for the distinctive experiences that startups can offer"

This program is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good standing from any discipline at the U of A with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher.

Students should be prepared to wear many hats and maintain a high degree of professionalism and autonomy.

The program includes a paid,12-week assignment with a company, as well as supplemental training opportunities, cohort meetings and coaching/support from experienced mentors. Funding for this fall's program is provided by Sam's Club.

Student applications are due by July 24. Organization applications are due by July 17.

With the ongoing threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U of A Board of Trustees said last week it has directed chancellors to consider "modifications and contingencies to the traditional academic calendar for the fall semester."

That includes potentially extending class periods and instructional days, eliminating traditional fall breaks, and planning for the potential of shifting to remote instruction after Thanksgiving.

Williams said working remotely wasn't an impediment to students or startups.

"What COVID-19 taught us is that students were extremely prepared to work in remote and virtual environments. In fact, by the time quarantine measures went into effect, our interns were already working seamlessly with their hosts in virtual environments — on Slack, in Google docs, in Asana and MS Teams and Basecamp,"

"In a perfect world, in-person relationships would be complemented with the efficiencies of remote teamwork. But if we've learned one thing this spring, it is that we don't live in a perfect world. Don't let that get in your way."
