All federal buildings in Portland, including the Federal Bankruptcy Court and Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse downtown, closed Friday amid a threat now under investigation by the FBI.
The Bankruptcy Court cited a “threat of violence in the area” as the reason for its shutdown.
The city of Portland also told employees to leave the downtown area by noon Friday, and advised them to avoid the downtown area over the weekend. Laura Oppenheimer, a spokesperson for the city’s Office of Management and Finance, told city employees the decision “in an abundance of caution, in response to a statement from the FBI.”
A source with knowledge of the situation told The Oregonian/OregonLive federal authorities received a threat that a vehicle filled with explosives would hit a federal building. It’s not clear if a specific building was named.
The source also said the downtown Standard Insurance and Standard Plaza buildings were being evacuated Friday morning.
The FBI said it was investigating the credibility of the threat. The agency said it would notify the public if investigators develop information indicating a credible threat.
The FBI asked anyone who has information to submit a tip online or call 800-225-5324 or 503-224-4181.
The Bankruptcy Court said its lobby was inaccessible Friday but all its services would continue to operate remotely. Hearings at the Hatfield courthouse that were set for Friday will be rescheduled.
This story has been updated to include the city of Portland’s decision.
