A blasting operation will close Highway 243 near the resort town of Idyllwild at midday Wednesday, Aug. 26, and drivers headed into the mountains are urged to take Highway 74 to avoid long delays, Caltrans officials say.
Crews plan to use blasting to dislodge boulders perched on a slope above Highway 243, between Idyllwild and Mountain Center, Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said.
The operation will close the highway in both directions from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Kasinga said. Periodic lane closures with flagging also are expected before and after the full closure, between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
If crews don’t finish Wednesday, another closure will occur during the same period Thursday, Aug. 27, a news release stated.
The work is part of ongoing repairs to Highways 243 and 74 — the main routes from urban Southern California to Idyllwild — which were severely damaged in a February 2019 storm. Repairs are expected to be completed by the end of 2020.
