Ex-French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko out of US Open, cites schedule change - ESPN

Jelena Ostapenko became the latest Grand Slam singles champion to withdraw from the US Open on Monday, citing a change in her schedule.

The 23-year-old stunned the sport in 2017, when she became the first unseeded player to win the French Open since 1933 and the first Grand Slam champion from Latvia. She was ranked No. 47 at the time. Ostapenko rose as high as No. 5 by the following March, but the power baseliner has struggled to find consistency since then. She is currently ranked No. 41 and has won just two minor titles to go with her Grand Slam trophy.

Osatapenko is one of six active Grand Slam singles titleists who will skip the US Open, including US Open winners Bianca Andreescu and Sam Stosur.

Earlier in the day, the US Open also lost Carla Suarez Navarro, a two-time US Open quarterfinalist. Suarez, now 31 years old and ranked No. 68, previously withdrew from the Western and Southern Open, currently underway at the National Tennis Center, citing unspecified "health reasons." The US Open will follow immediately, beginning Aug. 31.

Ranked as high as No. 6, Suarez has struggled with injuries late in her career. Once known for her willingness to play aggressive, attacking tennis despite her relatively slight stature, the 5-foot-4 native of the Canary Islands reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on three occasions.

Ostapenko's place in the main draw will be taken by No. 143-ranked Whitney Osuigwe, whose wild-card spot will go to a 16-year-old from California, Katrina Scott. Suarez will be replaced in the US Open women's direct entry field by No. 142-ranked Kurumi Nara.
