Newcomb Hollow Beach will be closed to swimmers for at least an hour Sunday morning after a great white shark was spotted in the water.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy’s Sharktivity App, which is run in partnership with local officials, confirmed the sighting Sunday around 10 a.m., noting that waters would be closed for an hour.

Officials made a similar call Saturday, initially ordering swimmers at the Wellfleet beach out of the water until 11 a.m., but then keeping the shores closed for a majority of the day after a Massachusetts State Police air wing crew detected two great whites in the vicinity.

While white sharks often prey on seals, they have attacked humans in the past. A 63-year-old woman was killed Monday in Maine’s first recorded fatal shark attack, and in 2018, a Cape Cod man died from Massachusetts’ first fatal shark attack since 1936
