Update: The MVC had nine agencies and two inspection stations closed due to storm related problems as of 10:15 a.m. They are the Eatontown agency and inspection station, Freehold, Hazlet, Oakland, Rahway agency and inspection, Rio Grande, South Brunswick agency and inspection, Springfield and Turnville.

State Motor Vehicle Commission officials said 14 agencies did not will open Wednesday due to power and internet outages caused by Tropical Storm Isaisas.

Agencies were closed in Eatontown, Hazlet, Newark, Oakland, Rahway, Randolph, Rio Grande, South Brunswick, South Plainfield, Springfield, Toms River, Wallington, Washington and Wayne, according to the MVC.

They join the West Deptford agency, a regional center, that remains closed until further notice after an employee tested positive for the coronavirus. It will reopen when contact tracing clears staff to resume operations.

MVC facilities were included in Gov. Phil Murphy’s state of emergency executive order, issued in advance of the storm that closed all state offices on Tuesday.

The storm lashed the state with torrential rains and high winds, uprooting trees, damaging cars and homes. The storm left 1.4 million without power in its wake and restoration could take days. Two confirmed tornados in South Jersey were reported.

However, that didn’t stop drivers from lining up as early as 11 p.m., at some agencies, including Lodi where a driver said in an email that he arrived to find 200 people ahead of him.

Customers have been continually lining up overnight to have a good position when agencies open in the morning to get a numbered ticket to be served. Camping out at agencies has become the norm since they reopened on July 7 to massive lines.

People who were scheduled to take road tests on Tuesday will have to make new appointments, said William Connolly, an MVC spokesman. Appointments can be made on the MVC website.

“Those whose road test appointments were canceled will need to reschedule,” Connolly said.
