Williams Grove National Open set for Saturday, and the richest Sprint Car purse of the year is on the line - PennLive

The richest Sprint Car race of the year is set for Saturday evening at William Grove Speedway.

A $75,000 winner’s share will be on the line in the 58th running of the Champion Racing Oil National Open. The action starts at the Mechanicsburg track at 7:30 p.m., and the big race, which is scheduled for 40 laps, will feature some of the country’s top drivers and also play a role in the 2020 World of Outlaws title chase, as five drivers remain in contention with just a handful of races left.

“This is one of the crown jewels,” World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series PR Coordinator Nick Graziano said. “With paying $75,000 to win, the drivers are going after.”

A few of the series most lucrative events, including the Nashville Nationals, were canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, which is why the Open is the richest of them all this year. Dirt track racing has been back in Pa. and other areas of the country for a few months now, however, and racers have been as eager as their fans to get back out to the oval.

Reserved seats are sold out, and Graziano said masks are “highly recommended but not required.”

It is expected that a near or at capacity crowd will be on hand for both Saturday’s main event and Friday’s night of racing, as well, though it was not immediately clear if a federal court ruling that reinstated Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf’s gathering limits on Thursday would have an impact. Dirt tracks around the state have been hosting big crowds for weeks and months now, however, and other events such as high school football games, the Carlisle Car Show, and more have hosted crowds larger than the 250-person limit on outdoor gatherings. Thus, it seems unlikely that those who already have tickets will be turned away due to the state’s gathering limitations.

Some of the more prominent drivers who are expected to be on hand for the Open include Brad Sweet, Logan Schuchart, Donny Schatz, Sheldon Haudenschild, David Gravel, Fred Rahmer, Danny Dietrich, Brent Marks, Daryn Pittman, and Lance Dewease, among others.

“Obviously, PA is different, but we race with the best guys in the world every night,” Haudenschild said, according to a news release.

“I think just getting there and qualifying well is going to be big for the weekend in Pennsylvania and go from there. There’s no reason we can’t win them.”

Friday’s Williams Grove card will start at 7:30 p.m., too. It’s headlined by a main event that will pay $10,000 to the winner.

According to a Williams Grove news release regarding tickets: “Adult general admission for October 2 is set at $30 with youth ages 13 – 20 priced at $15. Adult admission for October 3 is $35 with youth priced at $20.”

Tickets are also available on the World of Outlaws website, and both nights of racing will be streamed via pay-per-view on DIRTVision.
