LOGAN SQUARE — Saying the business “has not been financially sustainable,” the ownership team at Revolution Brewing has decided to close the Logan Square brewpub for the winter and reopen in the spring.
The brewpub at 2323 N. Milwaukee Ave. is the latest Chicago restaurant/bar to shutter heading into winter. Several other restaurants made the same announcement in recent weeks as Chicago battles a second surge of coronavirus cases.
“Unfortunately, the business has not been financially sustainable, the public health crisis is now getting worse and it doesn’t make any sense to just open the windows for fresh air and try to struggle further down this path right now,” Revolution’s ownership team wrote on Facebook Thursday.
Revolution’s announcement comes just days after Gov. JB Pritzker ordered restaurants and bars in Chicago to stop indoor service starting Friday, among other new rules. Chicago has seen its number of new cases and its positivity rate skyrocket in recent weeks, triggering the new rules.
It also comes after Revolution’s ownership team had to temporarily shut down the brewpub for a few days after a non-customer facing employee tested positive for coronavirus.
Revolution’s taproom at 3340 N. Kedzie Ave., which doubles as a production facility, will remain open seven days a week for contact-free curbside pickup.
Owner Josh Deth told Block Club last week store sales are up because more people are drinking beer at home amid the pandemic. Deth said they’ve moved some of their brewpub staffers to the taproom/production facility, where the majority of the work is right now.
“Our production team also continues to work safely to keep new innovative, high-quality beers flowing to retail outlets so we can all find some joy during these times of prescribed isolation,” the team said.
With the closure of the brewpub, Deth is furloughing brewpub employees but continuing to cover their health benefits for the next four months, according to the Facebook post.
“We sincerely hope to bring them back to work in March 2021 and swing the doors open again to see people sitting at that wooden bar,” the team wrote.
