Club members of the Black Diamond Society of Model Engineers got together over summer to pick out dates for the annual holiday open house at their two-story display in Bethlehem.
In the end, the plans for 2020 would collapse under Pennsylvania’s limits on crowding due to the coronavirus and the difficulty in social distancing in their 902 E. Macada Road location that is packed with elaborate mockups of trains traveling through villages, mountain passes and various other terrain.
“It would be unfair to those people who are going to schedule trips and things like that to come up and visit us for us to announce a show and call it off at the last minute,” the nonprofit group’s treasurer, John Fielding, told lehighvalleylive.com on Saturday.
The Nazareth Area Society of Model Engineers, 212 Main St. in Stockertown, has also decided against scheduling any 2020 open house or train show events.
Other area model railroad displays are planning to welcome the public, with mitigation measures in place amid a continuing steep rise in cases of the COVID-19 illness.
America on Wheels, in collaboration with the Lehigh Valley Garden Railroaders, announced Thursday the return of the Holiday Train Exhibit to the 5 N. Front St. attraction in Allentown.
G Scale, O Scale and HO Scale model trains will chug through different areas of the museum during regular hours Wednesdays through Sundays, beginning Nov. 27 through Dec. 30. Visit americaonwheels.org for full details. Museum admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $7 for students and children 12 and younger are free from Black Friday, Nov. 27, through December.
The museum will be following U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and requests all visitors wear a mask. Temperature checks are taken upon arrival. The museum has taken steps to display signage for keeping visitors socially distanced, 6 feet apart, Executive Director Linda Merkel said in a news release.
The Merchants Square Mall Model Train Exhibit, 1901 S. 12th St. in Allentown, is planning to open Dec. 4 for the holiday season, according to its Facebook page. Visit modeltrainexhibit.com for hours and admission.
Bethlehem’s Lehigh & Keystone Valley Model Railroad Museum, 705 Linden St., says on Facebook its Christmas Open House will be open Friday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 29. Admission is $7 and children 12 and younger are free. Masks are required for all guests over age 2.
Pennsylvania’s cumulative coronavirus cases since March passed 300,000 on Saturday, the Pennsylvania Department of Health said in announcing 6,778 additional positive tests for COVID-19, bringing the statewide total to 302,564. Another 112 of those infected have died as of Saturday, pushing the death toll attributed to COVID-19 to 9,801.
New Jersey also continues to see thousands of new cases per day, as deaths mount. This year’s Polar Express train ride in Phillipsburg has been canceled, The New York Susquehanna & Western Technical & Historical Society announced this week.
