Syracuse, N.Y. — Most major retailers will stay closed on Thanksgiving in 2020 for the first time in years, but many will open early on Black Friday to welcome shoppers.

The change in Thanksgiving hours is, of course, a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Stores began announcing they’d stay closed for the holiday over the summer.

Most big chains have been open on Turkey Day for years now. This time around, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kohl’s and many more will stay closed.

And while stores have been spreading out Black Friday deals across all of November to help cut down on crowds and lines, many will be open as early as 5 a.m. on the big shopping day.

Experts say shopping in person on Black Friday isn’t a good idea right now. The virus is on the rise across the country, state and in Central New York.

Things locally have worsened enough that Gov. Andrew Cuomo imposed orange and yellow zone coronavirus rules on large parts of Onondaga County. The zones carry new restrictions meant to slow spread of the virus.

The rules don’t affect retail stores, so shops are allowed to remain open. Restaurants, though, are no longer allowed to offer indoor dining. Only outdoor tables, takeout and delivery are permitted.

Destiny USA, Syracuse’s biggest mall, said previously it would be closed on Thanksgiving, but expected to open at 6 a.m. Black Friday. Mall officials have said they’re still working out what the new orange zone restrictions mean for shoppers.

If you are heading out to shop this weekend, wear a mask and keep apart from others. If you see a big line or crowd at a store, experts suggested coming back later.

If you’re sick, stay home.

With all that said, here’s a look at when big retailers plan to open this weekend. Things can change, especially this year, so it’s a good idea to double check hours with the stores you’re planning to visit before you get there.

Big Lots: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. (reopening at 6 a.m. on Black Friday)

Cabela’s: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (5 a.m. Black Friday)

Kmart: Many stores open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Many reopen as early as 6 a.m. on Black Friday)
