There are two, paid, hourly shifts that people are able to apply for.
“We are really hoping that the community is able to help us in stepping up to fill these shifts, so that we can get the Rainbow Center open as quickly as possible,” said City of Duluth Public Information Officer Kate Van Daele.
The Rainbow Center is the new location for the shelter that was going to originally be held at City Center West in West Duluth.
The City of Duluth, CHUM, St. Louis County, Loaves and Fishes, and the Duluth Housing and Redevelopment Authority decided to change the location as the Rainbow Center is a bigger space, and can therefore hold more people.
“That (City Center West) was a great location for us when we first started this program three years ago, and looking at the Rainbow Center through HRA, it was a really great opportunity to expand the space that was available at the Rainbow Center to be able to provide more sleeping spaces," said Van Daele.
The Rainbow Center will open for use on nights where the National Weather Service predicts that the temperature will drop to 32 degrees or below. It will be open from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m the following morning.
Van Daele says there will be safety measures in place such as cleaning multiple times per week, including after each use.
The Duluth Transportation Center will also provide transportation to and from the site on nights when it has been activated.
Chum's Drop-In-Center is also available for 24-hour-use as a warming shelter.
Both facilities are helping combat the homeless problem in Duluth, but Van Daele says to further do so, the city needs help from both state and federal partners to provide additional resources.
“We want to be able to do more, and be able to access more housing, more affordable housing, and to be able to make sure people have a safe place to sleep at night,” Van Daele said.
Van Daele adds the city is looking forward to getting the partnerships "hopefully soon," and that "we'll have hopefully more to come on that in the new year."
