I know. It sucks.
This should’ve been a really fun Saturday slate of college football to distract you from the anxiety of the Husky season opener which was supposed to serve as the nightcap. Instead, the Dawgs are on the sideline and there will certainly be a dark cloud looming over the day and likely right up until UW finally kicks off.
But if you have the constitution to watch college football in these trying times, here’s some of the games of the day at each time slot.
Arizona State at #20 USC- 9a PT, FOX (USC -11)
A 9am PT Pac-12 football game?!?! Man, I would kill for a 9am PT Husky game right about now.
There’s a very good chance that the South division comes down to this game given that I think these are the 2 best teams. Jayden Daniels and Kedon Slovis are both sophomores which means they should have one more showdown between them coming in 2021. If the Sun Devils are able to pull the upset it would show that they mean business this season and that the Clay Helton experience is in for more of the same.
#8 Florida at #5 Georgia- 12:30p PT, CBS (Georgia -3)
This game will likely determine who has a shot to be a potential 2nd team from the SEC to make the College Football Playoff alongside Alabama. The Gators have had an explosive offense while the Bulldogs have one of if not the best defense in college football. This should be a contrast in styles which usually leads to an intriguing game. The Kyle connection (Trask to Pitts) will be one to watch here.
#1 Clemson at #4 Notre Dame- 4:30p PT, NBC (Clemson -5.5)
The ACC is also trying to see if they have a shot at a pair of playoff entrants now that Notre Dame is playing football with them this season. That likely depends on the Fighting Irish springing the upset at home this weekend and then Clemson winning a rematch in the ACC title game. #1 NFL draft pick Trevor Lawrence is once again out after testing positive but Clemson didn’t skip too much of a beat with #1 ranked QB in the 2020 class D.J Uiagulelei manning the show.
(If you want to hate watch Stanford at Oregon [4:30p PT, ABC] for the hope that the Ducks fall flat on their face in the opener then I won’t blame you. If you have the option I would recommend flipping between the two and ultimately stay with whichever one is closest)
Washington State at Oregon State- 7:30p PT, FS1 (Oregon State -3)
With the planned opener at Cal cancelled it means the Huskies are instead projected to start their season at home against Oregon State. That means you can replace the UW’s 7:30p start time with a scouting job of 2 of their next 3 opponents. This will be the first game of the Nick Rolovich era and we’ll find out how similar his run and shoot system spits out results compared to the previous Mike Leach air raid. And Oregon State seems like a good bet to be the chaos team in the Pac-12 north by upsetting one of the favorites so we’ll see how they respond as the expected victor in this one.
