Is the post office open on Election Day? Is there mail delivery? Election Day is not a federal holiday, but some businesses and establishments are closed today to encourage Americans to vote.

Election Day is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, and millions are expected to vote in person Tuesday, Nov. 3, for the presidential election between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, plus local and state races. More than 98 million cast their ballots before Election Day due to the coronavirus pandemic, nearly 71 percent as many as the 139 million U.S. votes cast in 2016.

Despite not being a holiday, New York state election law provides for up to two hours of paid time off to enable an employee time to vote when added to their voting time outside their working hours. Many polling places are expecting long lines Tuesday, so the amount of PTO may be determined on a case-by-case basis.
