Breaking Down the Blue Devils
- The Blue Devils return to the field for the first time in two weeks after their game against Kentucky was postponed. Duke is 2-4 overall on the year and 2-3 in league play with each of the past two losses coming in heartbreaking fashion.
- Duke sits in fourth place in the South Division with a chance to move to third behind Wake Forest and Clemson.
- Duke's eight goals have come from five different players as Jack Doran, Daniel Wright, Lewis McGarvey, Nick Pariano and Stephen O'Connell all have goals. Conor Kelly, Matthias Frick, Peter Stroud, Scotty Taylor, Ian Murphy and Pariano have assists. Doran is the top goal scorer with three tallies.
- Pulisic, Frick and Murphy are the veterans anchoring the defense. They have a combined 154 starts and have been crucial to Duke this season. Rookie Antino Lopez and Amir Daley join the veteran crew. Frick, Murphy and McGarvey are the lone Blue Devils to play every minute this season.
- Twenty different Blue Devils have seen action this season, including nine of the 11 freshmen.
Series History
- Duke and North Carolina meet for the 95th time in history with the Tar Heels holding a 48-36-10 edge. The Tar Heels won the first match in 2020, 2-0, but Duke has the most recent victory in Chapel in 2019.
- The Blue Devils last won back-to-back regular season games against the Tar Heels in 1998-99. Duke last defeated North Carolina in consecutive games in Chapel Hill in 1997 and 1999.
Last Time Out
- Duke outshot No. 2 Wake Forest, 18-8, but a free kick goal in the 85th minute for the Demon Deacons proved to be the difference in a 2-1 setback for the Blue Devils Oct. 23. Jack Doran had the goal for the Blue Devils, which outshot Wake Forest, 13-5, in the second half.
- Wake Forest scored first in the 20th minute before Duke equalized in the 71st minute. Duke had numerous opportunities to win the game, but a spectacular strike in the waning minutes was the difference.
Last Time We Met
- North Carolina scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 victory over Duke in Durham. The Blue Devils held a 9-6 advantage in shots, but were unable to find the back of the net for the lone time in 2020.
- The Tar Heels went ahead early with a finish from Matthew Constant on a free kick service by Milo Garvanian 30 yards from goal. North Carolina made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute as a free kick deflected off the wall and past Will Pulisic.
Stroud the Workhorse
- While Matthias Frick, Lewis McGarvey and Ian Murphy all have played every minute this season, Peter Stroud has proved to be a workhorse in the middle of the field.
- Having seemingly boundless energy, Stroud has played all but 22 minutes as a central midfielder. The rookie runs upwards of eight to nine miles in games. He provided the game-winning assist with tired legs against the Wolfpack Sept. 26. He has gone the distance in three games and played 90-plus minutes twice.
Air McGarvey
- Rookie defender/midfielder Lewis McGarvey is Duke's best player in the air. His ability to win aerial duels has been crucial in the Blue Devils defense through the middle of the field. He has found a home recently in the holding midfielder role and isn't afraid to press forward, especially on set pieces.
- McGarvey was excellent in the first win over the Wolfpack, winning nearly every aerial battle he faced. Arguably, his most important was the win on the goal kick, which led to the winning goal with just 34 seconds left. The Northern Ireland native scored his first goal a couple weeks later on the road at the Wolfpack - and did so with his head of course.
ACC Tournament Scenarios
- Duke has locked up a spot in the ACC Tournament and will finish as either the third or fourth seed in the South Division. A win pushes the Blue Devils into the No. 3 spot, while a loss or tie puts them at fourth.
- If the Blue Devils take the fourth seed they will take on undefeated Pittsburgh in the quarterfinals. A win and No. 3 seed leaves many possibilities for Duke as the North Division has a lot of different scenarios to be decided this weekend.
On the Road
- Duke heads to North Carolina for its final road trip of the 2020 fall season. The Blue Devils are 1-2 this season with setbacks to Kentucky and Clemson and a win at NC State.
- Overall, on the road Duke is 30-46-9 under head coach John Kerr and 20-28-6 in ACC regular season road contests.
Duke vs Ranked Teams
- Duke went 1-4-1 against top 25 opponents last season. The Blue Devils are 0-1 this season with the loss coming to Wake Forest. Only five teams are being ranked this season.
- The Blue Devils captured four top 25 wins in 2017 and 2018, the most by a Kerr team after they won three in 2015 and 2008.
Up Next
- ACC Tournament action gets underway Nov. 15 on the campuses of the four North Carolina universities. The bracket will be announced following Duke and North Carolina Friday night.
