CHICAGO — Lincoln Park Zoo remains open for the time being, but the zoo is planning a months-long closure starting in January.
Since the zoo “functions as an outdoor venue,” it will remain open through the holidays with safety rules — like limiting capacity and requiring face coverings — in place, according to a Wednesday news release.
But the zoo will close to the public Jan. 4-March 4. Over the winter, many animals spend most of their time in their indoor habitants, but patrons can’t go inside its buildings due to state and city coronavirus restrictions. The zoo staff did not think it would be safe to visitors and workers to have to stay outside “in Chicago’s coldest months,” according to Lincoln Park Zoo.
ZooLights, the zoo’s hugely popular holiday lights show, will continue, though. The event kicks off Saturday and will run through Jan. 3. Tickets will cost $5 and can be bought online.
There will be five free nights: Nov. 24 and Dec. 9, 17, 21 and 29. Reservations will be required, and they’ll be open starting the Sunday before each free day.
There will also be two free members-only nights Nov. 20 and Dec. 1.
Due to the pandemic, all guests — including children and infants — must have a ticket to attend ZooLights this year, and groups cannot be larger than 10 people.
The Shedd Aquarium has closed until at least January due to the coronavirus surge, as well.
