Amtrak passengers in New York City will board trains at a new space across the street from Penn Station in the former James A. Farley Post Office building beginning Jan. 1.

The new space is being called the Moynihan Train Hall, in honor of late U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who pushed for the replacement of the former Amtrak Penn Station building for decades. The original Penn Station was knocked down in the 1960s, and Madison Square Garden was built on top of the train concourse and platforms.

When the Farley building across the street became available, rail advocates lobbied for it to become the new space for Amtrak. The project was developed in partnership with the State of New York’s Empire State Development Corp.

Like the original Penn Station, the Farley building was designed by architects McKim, Mead & White. Amtrak representatives said the new hall will feature a sky-lit atrium. Wifi will be available throughout the station, and a new lounge will serve first-class passengers. The building also includes 740,000 square feet of office space. Facebook has leased most of the space for employees.

There will not be two Amtrak stops in New York City. Moynihan Train Hall and New York Penn Station will operate as one complex. Amtrak will maintain a presence at Penn Station, but Moynihan Train Hall will be Amtrak’s new home in New York City.

Moynihan Train Hall will be open to the public daily starting at 5 a.m. The hall will be closed to the public between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. daily. Between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., all Amtrak operations will be handled at New York Penn Station, including baggage, red cap services, and access to platforms.

Enhanced customer amenities will include:

  • Dedicated customer waiting areas
  • A combined ticketing and baggage area
  • Improved security
  • Accessibility for customers with disabilities
  • Complimentary WiFi in all customer spaces
  • A dedicated lactation lounge for nursing mothers

New Metropolitan Lounge

The Moynihan Train Hall’s Metropolitan Lounge, formerly ClubAcela, will feature:

  • Priority boarding
  • Expanded food and beverage offerings
  • A family waiting area
  • Dedicated customer service agents
  • Private restrooms
  • Complimentary WiFi

The taxi area for the new hall is located at mid-block on 31st Street between 8th and 9th avenues near the main entrance. The rideshare area is located mid-block on 33rd Street between 8th and 9th Avenue.
