Game Recap: Football |

MOBILE, Ala. – WKU Football dropped its final game of the season, 39-21, to Georgia State in the LendingTree Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 26.

The loss moves the Hilltoppers to 8-5 all-time in bowl games, which includes a 4-3 record during the program's FBS Era (since 2009). This was WKU's second loss to the Panthers in a bowl contest, dating back to a 27-17 result in the 2017 Cure Bowl.

WKU will finish the season with a 5-7 overall record, including a 4-3 mark in conference play.

"Hats off to Georgia State," said head coach Tyson Helton in his postgame press conference. "That's a good football team. They just flat out outplayed us tonight. I thought there were a couple things earlier in the game where we were doing a good job, but penalties cost us in critical times. They did all the right things. They beat us, hands down, they had a good night. With that, we'll go back to the drawing board."

Following an interception in the endzone by safety Devon Key, the Hilltoppers opened the scoring at the 4:02 mark of the first quarter on a two-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome.

The Panthers answered back on their next drive, evening the game with an 11-yard touchdown run before eventually scoring 27 unanswered points to head into the break with a 27-7 advantage.

The Hilltoppers tried to get momentum back on their side to open the third quarter, using an eight-play, 64-yard drive capped off by a two-yard score by Gaej Walker to put the game at 27-14.

WKU was unable to capitalize after that, with Georgia State scoring 12-unanswered before a late rushing touchdown by C.J. Jones led to the eventual 39-21 final.

Offensively, Pigrome completed 17-of-33 passes for 180 yards while adding a touchdown on the ground, but threw two interceptions. Tight end Joshua Simon racked up a team-high 84 receiving yards and Jones ran for a team-best 57 yards. Both Jones and Walker also recorded touchdowns in the contest.

On the other side of the ball, Nick Days led the squad with a career-high 12 total tackles, followed by defensive tackle Ricky Barber, who collected 10 total tackles and one tackle for loss. The Hilltoppers recorded a combined 10 tackles for loss in the game, with eight different players contributing to that total.

As of Dec. 26, WKU is one of just eight teams to play 12 or more games during the 2020 season.
