NORWALK — Norwalk’s LA Fitness location was ordered to close on Tuesday after health officials found members weren’t wearing masks or adhering to social distancing while exercising.
The facility also failed to enforce revised capacity limits, according to Norwalk Health Director Deanna D’Amore. Gyms are currently supposed to be operating at 50 percent capacity.
D’Amore said both the city health and police departments signed a closure order due to repeated violations of reopening rules.
“Staff and patrons were cooperative and left the premises as they work to correct these issues,” D’Amore said.
City spokesperson Josh Morgan said that the inspection was planned based on complaints being received through the state’s portal and the Norwalk Police Department’s non-emergency line. He added the Health Department had gone by previously to remind the gym of the reopening guidelines.
Kathleen Marsh, a Norwalk resident who had been using LA Fitness for four years, was one of the users who noticed the lack of masks at the gym. Marsh had been working with a trainer three times a week before COVID-19 struck in March, and when she returned for her sessions in September, she said she noticed people working out without masks on, despite a large sign saying people needed to wear a mask and staff trying to address the issue.
Marsh said she chose to say something to the manager rather than file an official complaint, but after two visits and no changes, she stopped going back. Her membership is suspended through January, but she’s not planning to return even then.
“I was very upset with them,” she said. “In general, the place is nice and they have a lot to offer, but it’s sort of slipshod the way it’s run. It don’t want people going out of business or losing their jobs but they’re not doing (it) right.”
The gym must submit a written COVID-19 safety plan outlining how it will adhere to the rules before it’s allowed to reopen, D’Amore said. The facility can reopen once the plan is reviewed and approved by the health department.
On Tuesday night, the club had a notice posted on its website stating it would be closed from 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 1 to 5 a.m. on Dec. 4 due to a “national emergency.” A call to the facility on Wednesday afternoon went to voicemail.
The closure came a day after Gov. Ned Lamont said he would not close gyms or indoor dining despite rising coronavirus case numbers.
City officials said anyone who is concerned about a business violating reopening rules can report it at the police department’s non-emergency line at (203) 854-3000.
