ACC Leads All Conferences with Eight NCAA Selections
- Led by NC State’s No. 1 seed, eight Atlantic Coast Conference women’s basketball teams were selected to compete in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the most of any conference.
- Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, NC State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest earned bids to participate in this year’s event.
- NC State is a No. 1 seed for the first time in program history and is making its 26th appearance in the field, including its fourth consecutive.
- Louisville owns the longest active NCAA streak of any conference team with its 10th consecutive trip and 23rd overall.
- Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech are both making their 10th trip to the NCAA Tournament. It is the first for the Hokies since 2006 and first for the Yellow Jackets since 2014.
- Florida State and Syracuse are in the field for the eighth consecutive time, with the Seminoles earning the 19th selection in program history and the Orange claiming their 12th overall.
- Wake Forest is in the tournament for the second time and first appearance since 1988. North Carolina secures its conference-leading 28th NCAA selection and second consecutive.
 
ACC and the NCAA Tournament
- It marks the third consecutive NCAA Tournament that the ACC has had eight teams selected, leading all conferences each year, and matching the ACC record for teams in the field (2014-15, 2018-19).
- The ACC has had at least one No. 1 seed in each of past seven tournaments and 21 times overall. The ACC has had multiple No. 1 seeds in six tournaments (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2018, 2019).
- In the last four NCAA Tournaments, ACC teams have earned 31 selections to compete in the field, also the most of any conference.
- Since 2014, the ACC leads all conferences with five appearances in the NCAA title game.
- The ACC also owns the most NCAA Tournament wins (84) of any conference since 2014. The next closest conference has 70.
- ACC member institutions have won three NCAA Championships and made 24 trips to the Final Four. Seven different institutions have represented the ACC in the Women’s Final Four.
 
Five ACC Programs Earn WBB & MBB NCAA Selections
- Five ACC programs were selected to compete in this year's NCAA Women's and Men's Basketball Tournament, tied for the most of any conference.
- Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Syracuse and Virginia Tech are the ACC programs to accomplish the feat.
 
Georgia Tech's Fortner Accomplishes Rare Feat
- Georgia Tech's Nell Fortner, the conference's Blue Ribbon Panel Coach of the Year selection, becomes one of just 15 coaches in NCAA history to lead three different teams to the NCAA Tournament.
- Prior to taking over the Yellow Jackets program, Fortner led Purdue and Auburn to the tournament.
 
Wake Forest's Hoover, Florida State's Wyckoff Make ACC History
- With Florida State and Wake Forest's NCAA selections, interim head coach Brooke Wyckoff and head coach Jen Hoover become the first coaches in ACC women's basketball history to play in the tournament with a league school and also lead that same team to the tournament as a head coach.
- Hoover was a member of the Demon Deacons' 1988 NCAA Tournament squad as a player and Wyckoff played on the Seminoles' 2001 NCAA team.
- Miami's Katie Meier is the only other coach in ACC women's basketball history to play in the tournament with a league school (Duke) and also lead a conference school (Miami) to the NCAA Tournament.
 
NC State's Moore a Finalist for National Coach of the Year
- After earning ACC Coach of the Year honors from the league's head coaches, NC State's Wes Moore is one of four finalists for the 2021 Naismith Women's Coach of the Year award.
- His 746 career wins rank eighth among active NCAA Division I women's basketball head coaches.
 
Four from ACC Named AP All-Americans
- Four Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball student-athletes were named to the Associated Press All-America Teams, announced on Wednesday.
- Louisville senior guard Dana Evans garnered first-team honors, while NC State junior center Elissa Cunane was named to the second team. NC State sophomore wing Jakia Brown-Turner and Virginia Tech senior guard Aisha Sheppard were named honorable mention.
 
ACC Teams Ranked Top 10 in Final AP Top 25 Poll
- For the eighth consecutive year, at least two ACC teams are ranked among the top 10 of the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
- After having the nation's top two teams for two weeks this season, NC State is ranked No. 3 in the final AP Poll, while Louisville is No. 8.
 
ACC Tournament Recap
- NC State claimed its second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament championship on Sunday, March 7, turning back Louisville in a dramatic title game that lived up to its billing.
- The second-seeded Wolfpack prevailed 58-56 in what will be remembered as one of the tournament’s more fantastic finishes. Raina Perez’s 17-foot jumper with 2.1 seconds remaining snapped a tie score, and ACC Player of the Year Dana Evans missed a 3-point try at the buzzer that would have won it for the top-seeded Cardinals.
- NC State earned the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament qualifying spot while securing back-to-back ACC Tournament championships for the first time in program history.
- Prior to winning each of the last two years under head coach Wes Moore, the Wolfpack’s previous tourney titles came in 1980, 1985, 1987 and 1991 under the legendary Kay Yow.
- Wolfpack junior center Elissa Cunane, who averaged 23.3 points and nine rebounds in NC State's three wins, was named the ACC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
- The average margin of victory in the 12 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament games was just 7.5 points.
- Seven of the 12 games were decided by less than 10 points, headlined by the two-point NC State win over Louisville in the championship game. The largest margin of victory for any team in the tournament was just 13 points.
- The 2021 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament marked the 44th edition of the longest running conference women’s basketball championship in the nation and it was the 21st time in the last 22 years that the Greensboro Coliseum has hosted the event.
- The Coliseum, with assistance from the Greensboro Sports Foundation, Greensboro Sports Commission and Convention and Visitors Bureau, is set to play host to the tournament through 2023.
 
Louisville's Norman Named WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year
- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced on Thursday, March 18, that Louisville women's basketball associate head coach Stephanie Norman has been named the 2021 Division I Assistant Coach of the Year.
- In her 14th year at Louisville and her ninth as associate head coach, Norman has served on the Cardinals' staff since the hiring of head coach Jeff Walz. She has helped the Cardinals to a 382-107 overall record since the 2007 season.
- The WBCA Assistant Coach of the Year award is presented to one associate head coach or assistant coach in each membership division who demonstrates commitment to their program, their student-athletes and their head coach; their impact coaching on court; their mentorship and impact on other coaches; and their professional manner and attitude.
 
Georgia Tech's Alverson Named WBCA Thirty Under 30 Recipient
- Georgia Tech women’s basketball assistant coach Blanche Alverson was recognized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday, being named to the WBCA Thirty Under 30 presented by Morgan Stanley Global Sports & Entertainment list for the 2020-21 season.
- In her second season at Georgia Tech, Alverson has helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a combined 35-19 (.648) record through two seasons thus far as Tech opens the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
- The WBCA Thirty Under 30 program was created to recognize 30 up-and-coming women’s basketball coaches age 30 and under at all levels of the game. Each honoree has exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner, and attitude and professional association involvement. In its sixth year of the program, Alverson is the only ACC coach named to the list in 2021.
 
Top ACC Duos
- Virginia Tech's Elizabeth Kitley and Aisha Sheppard are the top scoring duo (36.8) in the ACC with the former averaging 18.5 points per game for second in the conference and the latter contributing 18.3, third most in the league.
- Wake Forest's Ivana Raca (16.8) and Gina Conti (14.0) form the league's second highest duo at 30.8 points per game.
- In rebounding, the Syracuse duo of Emily Engstler (9.0) and Kamilla Cardoso (8.3) pace the conference at 17.3. NC State's Elissa Cunane (8.2) and Kayla Jones (7.3) are the league's second-highest pair at 15.5.
 
ACC in NCAA Rankings
- ACC teams and student-athletes lead the nation and rank among the nation's top 20 in numerous categories.
- As a team, the Wolfpack is fifth in the nation in defensive rebounds per game with 31.3. North Carolina ranks 17th with 29.7.
- Louisville ranks 11th nationally in field-goal percentage at 46.9%, while NC State is 14th with a 46.6 clip.
- Syracuse ranks third nationally in blocks per game with 6.9, while the Orange and Louisville are fifth and 16th in total blocks with 151 and 126, respectively.
- The Hokies are seventh in the country in 3-point field goals made per game with 9.8.
- Louisville ranks 10th in scoring margin at 16.9 and NC State is 13th with 15.8 The Cardinals are 13th in scoring offense at 78.7 points per game, while the Wolfpack is 19th at 77.3.
- Individually, Syracuse's Tiana Mangakahia leads the nation with 7.5 assists per game.
- Georgia Tech's Lorela Cubaj ranks seventh in the nation with 9.1 defensive rebounds per game.
- Syracuse freshman Kamilla Cardoso is 10th nationally in field-goal percentage at 58.3.
- Virginia Tech's Aisha Sheppard has hit 85 3-pointers to rank sixth in the nation this season, while Clemson's Kendall Spray has made 66 to rank 18th.
- Louisville's Dana Evans is fifth nationally in free-throw percentage with a 92.0 clip.
