Men's Tennis Season Comes to a Close With 4-0 Loss at Campbell - Longwood Athletics

samasamp.blogspot.com
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Longwood men's tennis' 2021 spring came to a close Saturday at the hands of Big South rival Campbell, which put away the Lancers with singles wins at the top three spots to clinch a 4-0 victory Saturday morning at Nisbet Tennis Center.

The Fighting Camels (1-10, 1-4 Big South) took an early 1-0 lead after clinching the doubles point and then cruised to three straight singles wins to put an early end to the Lancers' regular-season finale.

Campbell standouts Benjamin Niv and Matthew Beecher drove that effort, teaming up for a No. 1 doubles win over Longwood's top duo of Rosen Naydenov and Ignacio Sandoval and then splitting up for two more singles wins at the top two lines. Niv outlasted Naydenov in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, at No. 1 to clinch the win after Beecher swept Guilherme Sergio 7-5, 6-0 at No. 2 and Robin Angles took down Ignacio Sandoval 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.

Longwood's bottom three lines all went unfinished, with freshman Andrew Illett, junior Guillermo Cagigas and sophomore Ernest Rocabert getting the final starts in Longwood's Nos. 4-6 alignments.

The loss puts an end to a COVID-shortened 2020-21 season in which the Lancers (6-9, 0-5 Big South) did not compete in the fall and condensed their spring by more than two weeks. Despite the abbreviated schedule, several Lancers ended 2021 on a high note, with Naydenov emerging as Longwood's No. 1 singles player for four of the final five bouts of his Longwood career, Cagigas winning three of his lsat four singles decisions, and Sergio moving into a tie for sixth place on the program's career singles wins leaderboard with 48 wins.

The match also closes out a standout four-year chapter for Longwood's senior class of Marc Casasnovas, Naydenov and Sergio, who led Longwood to a record of 39-32 overall, including back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19. Naydenov was here for all four of those seasons, while Casasnovas and Sergio joined the program during a 2018-19 season in which the Lancers went 13-9.

With Casasnovas, Naydenov and Sergio all eyeing graduation in May, Longwood is slated to return six players for head coach Jhonnatan Medina Alvarez's 2021-22 team. Highlighting that group will be Cagigas, who went 7-7 in singles play and 7-7 in doubles this season, Andrew Illett, who appeared in eight bouts in his inaugural season, his classmate Sebastian Mezo who finished 2-3 overall, Ernest Rocabert, who went 6-7, and Sandoval, who tied Sergio for the team lead with eight singles wins.
