'Promising Young Woman' star Carey Mulligan makes her hosting debut, with rapper Kid Cudi as the musical guest.

Saturday Night Live tackled a news program in Minnesota during its cold open.

The KDBD Midday News featured a group of four engaging in a debate about the trial of Derek Chauvin. Kate McKinnon and Alex Moffat sat opposite Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim.

“I thought the prosecution did an excellent job questioning the medical examiner,” began McKinnon's character. She later added that she assumed they were all in agreement about his case. "Sounds like we all agree there's no way Derek Chauvin walks away from this."

But as it turned out, Thompson and Nwodim were not too sure. "You guys aren't buying into Chauvin's defense are you?" asked Moffat.

"Of course not," answered Thompson. "I mean, the defense tried to make a case that George Floyd's drug use was somehow responsible is just deplorable," said Nwodim. "It was a clear act of desperation to create doubt where there is none," added Thompson.

McKinnon responded with, "Exactly, and there's no way the jury's going to fall for that."

As the news program continued, Nwodim commented on the whole situation. "Let's just say, we've seen this movie before..." she said. "I think skepticism of the legal process is valid," declared McKinnon. "Historically, police have gotten away in other cases like this."

There was a pause, before Thompson asked: "Historically?" Nwodim emphasized, "She means every time."

Further into the sketch, McKinnon persisted, "After all the protests last summer, there’s no way this doesn’t go the way we hope." Beside her, Moffat went to quote Thomas Jefferson, which Thompson said was a "bad start." "For the sake of our city, I hope justice is finally served," said McKinnon.

Moffat later declared, "Protests should be non-violent." Thompson replied quickly, "Thank you for that little note, Craig."

Nwodim and Thompson went on to reference the "glaring discrepancy" in the way Black people are treated by police.

As the group moved onto other topics, McKinnon added that we "lost royalty" this week. "Yes, the rapper DMX died," nodded Nwodim. When it was clear she was talking about Prince Philip, this led to a confusion about the singer Prince having died long ago.

"There's got to be one news story we can all agree on," said McKinnon, at a loss. The group decided that they agreed on the case of Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz.

Promising Young Woman star and Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan makes her hosting debut, with rapper Kid Cudi as the musical guest.

Mulligan declared in her monologue, "People in America are always saying the nicest things to me, like ‘I loved you in Brokeback Mountain,’ and ‘you’re amazing in Fosse/Verdon.’ I used to say, ‘oh, sorry, that’s Michelle Williams. But now I just say, ‘thank you. I am Michelle Williams.'"

She went on to say that she spend the last year in England quarantining in the countryside with her husband and two small children, "which is the beginning of most horror movies." The actress later expressed her excitement that shops are open in New York. "Now I never thought I’d say this, but walking into a Banana Republic was a magical experience. Big day for me."
