U.S. Open Cup won’t be held this spring - Sounder At Heart

After being played for every year for more than 100 years, the U.S. Open Cup is now in danger of failing to be played for a second consecutive year. On Friday, U.S. Soccer called off plans to hold the tournament this spring, citing ongoing challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The logistical and financial burdens to have the tournament take place this spring in the current environment are substantial,” said Open Cup Commissioner Paul Marstaller. “Even though all of U.S. Soccer’s member professional teams will be playing in their respective league competitions this year, the Committee did not feel it wise to have clubs divert important resources during the next two months for Open Cup play. Instead, we will look further into the future to see what possibilities might exist for 2021. After that, a full-scale 2022 Open Cup is less than a year away.”

The tournament was scheduled to be played between May 18-June 30 and had already been scaled back to 16 teams, eight of which would have come from MLS, which was going to use the first three weeks of the season to double as qualifying.

Although U.S. Soccer is holding out hope for rescheduling the tournament later in the year, they will need to find a way to schedule around even more fixture congestion.
