Painesville, OH. – The Wheeling University Wrestling team capped off a full weekend of Cardinal action when they traveled to the Storm Open on Sunday. They got a seventh-place finish from their heavyweight wrestler, pacing an event that was filled with milestones for some of Wheeling's younger freshmen.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was their heavyweight wrestler Clarouly Meca, who wrestled in the 285-pound weight class. His day didn't start out the way he would have liked, as he took a loss in his first match-up against Notre Dame's Mike Viramontes in a 4-1 decision. Then, he moved to the consolation round where he would put together a couple of big achievements. His run started with a first-round consolation pinfall when he defeated Tiffin's Sean Robles in 1:54, and then he came back in the second round with another pinfall over Ohio University's Drew Harris, which he finished in 2:25. He was set to face off against Bulls Wrestling Club's Robbie Unruh in the seventh-place match and would end up earning that seventh-place finish due to a medical forfeit.

One wrestler who hit a milestone in his career was freshman Josh Sharron, who competed in his first collegiate event of the season. In his first collegiate match, he fell in a sudden victory to Fairmont State's Pat Vega in the first round of the 141-pound weight class. However, he would pick up his first collegiate victory in his next match, when he picked up a Major Decision over Tiffin's Cole Bryson 19-7. Unfortunately, he dropped his final match but had a strong showing in his first collegiate event. Mason Kuneff wrestled in the 184-pound weight class and Brennon Reid wrestled at 149 and went each went 0-2 in their respective weight classes. Both dropped close matches in their final matches of the day with Kuneff losing 4-0 and Reid losing 5-1.

Rounding out the field of competitors for the Cardinals was freshman Julius Hobbs in the 133-pound weight class. Hobbs received a bye to start the afternoon and lost his second-round match by technical fall to the #13 wrestler in the country, Corey Gamot from Lake Erie College. Once he hit the consolation round, Hobbs turned it on picking up back-to-back pinfalls in the first two rounds. In his first match, he defeated Lake Erie's Brenden Hamilton in 1:37. After moving on, he faced Kent State's Jacob Sherman and picked up his second pinfall in 3:54. He rounded out the day with a hard-fought match against Nicholas Minnic from the Bulls Wrestling Club. It came down to the final seconds of the match, but Hobbs was unable to bounce back, falling 7-6.

The Wheeling University Wrestling team wraps up the 2021 portion of the schedule when they head to the Midwest Classic at the University of Indianapolis. The event runs from December 18th to December 19th in Indianapolis, Indiana.
