Wolves Open Indoor Season With Strong Results In Spokane - WOU Athletics

SPOKANE, Wash. – Getting to compete in an indoor event since the early part of 2020, the Western Oregon University men's and women's track and field teams collected several top results during the Spokane Invitational at The Podium on Saturday.

Maya Hopwood and Ana Popchock opened the early events of the day competing in the women's 60-meter. Hopwood posted a time of 7.82, while Popchock came in with a time of 7.95. Both were close to qualifying. Popchock's time is the fourth fastest in program history, as Hopwood holds the top time in the event at 7.58. Logan Jackson also ran in another heat of the women's 60-meter posting a time of 8.54.

Running in his first event for the Wolves, Amari Hendrix posted a time of 7.26 during the men's 60-meter, just missing out on a qualifying spot. Eli Nafziger also competed in the 60-meter posting a time of 7.59.

Popchock qualified for the final in the women's 60-meter hurdles coming in with a time of 9.15 to place seventh in the prelims. Jenelle Hurley, Amity Deters and Hailey Blue all competed in the same event with Hurley posting a time of 9.50, Deters at 10.39 and Blue at 10.65.

In the finals, Popchock again came in seventh with a time of 9.23.

In the men's 60-meter hurdles, Justin Conklin led the way for the Wolves in his first event at WOU posting a time of 8.75. JJ Walker wasn't far behind coming in with a time of 9.03. Gabe Burchfield, who is also a member of the WOU football team, was the next one in for the Wolves posting a time of 9.12. Rounding out the four in the event for the Wolves was Deshaun Stevens crossing at 9.52.

Hopwood, Jessy Hart and Jackson all competed in the women's 200-meter. Hopwood came in first for the Wolves in 22nd with a time of 26.43. Hart was right behind with a time of 26.59 to come in 25th. Jackson came in 60th.

Hendrix entered into his second event for the Wolves in the men's 200-meter as Gabe Arce-Torres also competed in the event and the two finished together with Hendrix crossing in 17th with a time of 22.84 and Arce-Torres with a time of 22.89 to come in 18th.

Caleb Southworth entered into his first event for the Wolves running in the men's 400-meter coming in 13th with a time of 52.23.

Keeton Sanchez and Easton Pomrankey each entered in the men's 800-meter. Sanchez came in ninth with a time of 1:57.70, while Pomrankey came in 15th.

Katie Chapman ran in the women's 800-meter coming in seventh with a time of 2:29.28.

Timothy Rambo ran in the men's mile coming across in 19th with a time of 4:29.42.

Bailey Smith collected a top-10 result in the men's 3,000 when he came in with a time of 8:38.22 to place ninth.

Caitlin Heldt secured the sixth-best time in program history in the women's 3,000 crossing with a time of 10:19.38 to place seventh. Kaylin Cantu also ran in the 3,000 and placed 18th.

Deters, Hurley and Macy Clemens all entered in the women's high jump. Deters led the way hitting a height of 5-03 to come in 11th. Hurley reached 5-01 to come in 15th and Clemens was right behind at 4-11 to come in 16th.

In the men's high jump, Conklin led five Wolves in the event when he placed 11th hitting a height of 6-04.75. Devin Hasher finished just a few spots behind Conklin in 13th hitting a mark of 6-02.75. Burchfield hit the same height of 6-02.75 to come in 14th. Walker hit a mark of 6-00.75 to come in 18th. Nafziger rounded out the group coming in 24th.

In the women's long jump, Clemens hit a distance of 16-03.75 to come in 16th, while Blue also competed in the event coming in 28th.

In the men's long jump, Stevens was approaching a top-five finish when he came in sixth with a height of 21-07.50. Walker was the next one in for the Wolves hitting a mark of 19-09.75 to come in 18th. Marlon Harrison and Nafziger rounded out the group for the Wolves with Harrison coming in 23rd and Nafziger in 24th.

Moana Gianotti picked up a top-five finish in the women's shot put with a throw of 42-10.25 to come in fifth. Liliana Lyness-Morales hit a distance of 35-10.00 to come in 16th. Halle Hargett also competed in the event coming in 21st.

Walker placed 23rd in the men's shot put.

Harrison had a strong result in the men's triple jump when he posted a top-five finish coming in fourth with a distance of 44-00.00.

In the women's triple jump, it was a strong result for Popchock when she came in seventh with a distance of 36-08.25.

In the women's weight throw, Gianotti and Lyness-Morales each had top-10 finishes. Gianotti hit a distance of 49-04.25 to come in eighth. Lyness-Morales was right behind in ninth hitting a distance of 47-04.50. Emillia Carpenter came in 13th hitting a distance of 45-02.50. Rounding out the results for the Wolves was Halle Hargett coming in 25th.

In the relays, the men entered two teams in the 4x400. The team of Walker, Stevens, Rambo and Southworth posted a time of 3:28.28 to come in third. The group of Hendrix, Sanchez, Pomrankey and Burchfield came in fifth with a time of 3:34.94. In the women's 4x400 relay, the Wolves ahd Hart, Deters, Hurley and Chapman who came in seventh with a time of 4:11.93.

WOU will now be off for the next several weeks before returning to competition on Jan. 9 at the Portland Indoor #1 Meet.
